The Mission of the School of Music is leading in musical excellence through transformative teaching, performing and scholarly activity.

Position Overview

Assist faculty members with classes and courses; assist with research and instrument development/assessment. Cover classes or proctor exams. Assist department chairperson, faculty members, or other professional staff members in college or university by performing teaching or teaching-related duties, such as teaching lower level courses, developing teaching materials, preparing and giving examinations, and grading examinations or papers. Graduate assistants must be enrolled full-time in a graduate school program.

Department Specific Job Functions

Assist faculty members in a variety of ways: cover classes or proctor exams; lecture in areas where the student is deemed competent; potentially tutor in classes which are in the student’s discipline; assist faculty with class preparation (i.e., library research, internet searches, and PowerPoint presentations), record keeping, and supervised grading of exams and assignments; assist with group study sessions as needed; and, other duties/responsibilities as deemed necessary or required.

  • Learning Strategies – Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things
  • Monitoring – Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action
  • Active Listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times
  • Writing – Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience
  • Active Learning – Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making
  • Complex Problem Solving – Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions

Enrollment Requirements

Fall/Spring Semesters: All student employees must be enrolled at least half time to be eligible to work any UCO student position. Half time enrollment for Fall/Spring is considered 5 hours for graduates and 6 hours for undergraduates. International students shall be enrolled full time to be eligible to work as a student worker. Full time enrollment is 9 credit hours for graduates and 12 credit hours for undergraduates.

Summer Semester: All student employees must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours to be eligible to work a regular student position. Students not enrolled in summer classes must be enrolled in Fall classes in order to work on campus, but they (and the department) will be required to pay FICA taxes.

Enrollment Exception: If the number of credit hours needed to graduate is less than the minimum number of hours required to work, the student must obtain a letter from his/her Academic Advisor, stating the number of hours needed to graduate, and submit it to Human Resources. Qualifications/Experience Required

  • Completed Undergraduate Degree
  • Musical experience/expertise as required by recommending supervisor
  • Recommendation from UCO School of Music faculty is required for this position

Qualifications/Experience Preferred

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Dependable and thorough
  • Have sensitivity of intercultural communication, and good interpersonal skills
  • Instruction experience with peers or younger students
