COURSE: Listening and Speaking for Business Purposes – PMPB 6F22

DEPARTMENT: Graduate Programs, Goodman School of Business

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Temporary Part-time (September 1, 2024- April 30, 2025)

COMPENSATION:

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds. Please refer to the collective agreement for more details.

DUTIES:

In accordance with Unit 1 Collective Agreement, the Teaching Assistant will be responsible for helping students develop their English speaking and pronunciation skills. This includes conducting weekly 1-1 and/or small group meetings with students; preparing additional materials based on assigned textbook and Goodman School of Business curriculum; marking assignments and providing thoughtful and constructive feedback with aim of preparing students for graduate business studies; preparing and proctoring tests/examinations as specified by the requirements of particular course; tracking and maintaining accurate records of individual student performance and posting all grades on Brock’s LMS; attending all course-associated meetings as outlined for the particular course; working collaboratively with instructors who teach corresponding course lectures and following guidelines provided by them; maintaining frequent communication with program coordinator; other course-specific duties as assigned by program coordinator.

The current plan is to deliver this course in person in the Fall; however, an online section may be offered depending on student needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master’s level qualifications in related areas (e.g. English, Business Communications, Applied Linguistics).

2. Minimum of 2 years’ experience teaching advanced speaking and pronunciation skills to international students at the post-secondary level.

3. Successful record helping students develop both proficiency and confidence in their ability to communicate.

4. Expertise teaching interactive speaking activities that make learners practice a range of language structures in a variety of contexts and in a meaningful way.

5. Must be exceptionally knowledgeable about segmentals and supresegmentals that are commonly challenging to non-native English speakers.

6. Proven ability to assess impromptu conversations and provide detailed feedback to students.

7. Demonstrated skill in tutorial facilitation.

8. Demonstrated interpersonal qualities that support international students’ course-related needs. Ability to communicate effectively and provide constructive feedback. Solid organizational skills and demonstrated capacity to keep accurate records. Ability to work collaboratively with other instructors and program coordinator.

9. Advanced competence in the use of email, Sakai, Microsoft Office 365, Internet, Lifesize, Turnitin, Digital teaching platforms, Web-based voice recording services, and multi-media equipment.

As per Article 22.04 of the Collective Agreement:

  • Graduate Students enrolled at Brock University shall not accept an appointment in excess of an average of ten hours per week over an academic term, in which she is enrolled as a full-time student, without the prior permission of the Dean of Graduate Studies.
  • Undergraduate Students enrolled at Brock University shall not accept more than nine Teaching Assistant appointments, or the equivalent of nine Teaching Assistant appointments in any classification, per term minus the number of courses in which that student is currently enrolled;
  • Part-time Graduate Students and Non-Students shall not accept any appointment which, taken together with all other appointments at the University, would cause the member to exceed the maximum number of regular hours – i.e. not overtime hours – allowable in a work week under the Employment Standards Act, as amended from time to time.

Permission to exceed the above-mentioned workload limits should be obtained prior to application.
