Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Geography & Environment is an exciting and dynamic department located within the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Geography & Environment has an important legacy at Carolina, and the Department is proud to continue its mission of education, research, and service to the community and the world about the importance of geographic knowledge. The Department has evolved significantly since its early days when we only had one faculty member, to being a world-class department with 23 tenure-track faculty and a number of teaching and research faculty, covering a wide range of sub-fields in Geography. We conduct research all over the world, some of which investigate the most pressing social and environmental questions facing our planet.

Position Summary

The Department of Geography & Environment at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor in Spatial Data Science. This is a permanent fixed-term position. The position will have an initial appointment of 3 years with the possibility of reappointment. We seek a faculty member who can teach courses in Spatial Data Science, which might include courses in Spatial Data Science, GeoAI/ML, Quantitative Methods, Cartography, GIS, Remote, Sending, and Digital Image Processing, in accordance with the instructor’s areas of expertise. The successful applicant will teach three courses per semester (9 credit hours) to primarily undergraduate students for a total of 6 courses per academic year. All courses will be taught live and in person. The courses taught by the candidate can include a mix of introductory and advanced ones. Advanced courses may be in a range of thematic areas that match the instructor’s expertise. Existing course syllabi and class plans will be available for some courses. Teaching assistants will be available to support large-format courses. The instructor will have the opportunity to engage in department and university life by attending department events, workshops, and colloquia, as well as serving on various committees. The candidate is expected to dedicate 80% of their time to teaching and 20% of their effort to services.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Ph.D. in Geography or similar science, with an emphasis on Spatial Data Science.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Prior teaching experience in the field is preferred, as are candidates who have published in the field.
