The John Chambers College of Business and Economics at West Virginia University (WVU) is seeking qualified applicants for a Teaching Assistant Professor (TAP) position in the area of cybersecurity beginning January 2025. The appointment will be in the Department of Management Information Systems and Supply Chain.

West Virginia University is the comprehensive Land Grant University of the State of West Virginia with a Carnegie Classification of Highest Research Activity (i.e., R1 University). WVU is designated by the NSA and DHS as a National Center of Academic Excellence in both Cyber Defense Research and Cyber Defense Education. WVU is also one of two academic partners of the National Center of Excellence in Cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure and is also a member of the USCYBERCOM Academic Engagement Network (AEN).

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications are possession of a Master’s degree before the start date of the position in one of the following areas: cybersecurity, information technology, data assurance, information technology management, management information systems, information sciences, computer science, business administration, data analytics, AI/ML, GIS, or a related field. 

Candidates must have knowledge, skill and interest in teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in the topics of cybersecurity, systems administration, networking, data analytics, or similar topics, and must be willing to establish and maintain relationships with university partner organizations, in support of our outreach activities. Industry certifications in cybersecurity topics are preferred.

Candidates are expected to:

  • Teach graduate and undergraduate classes in topics related to the areas of Cybersecurity, Systems Administration, Network and Data Communications, Information Security Management, Penetration Testing, Computer Forensics, and Application Security, at a minimum.
  • Serve as the education and training lead for the Cyber-Resilience Resource Center (CRRC), which includes supporting the operations of the center through directly supervising undergraduate and graduate student experiential learning industry outreach projects, development of education and training material aligned with the center’s mission, promotion of the center’s outreach efforts, and developing collaborative relationships with private and public sector partners.
  • Develop and hold training courses to assist students with passing industry IT and cybersecurity-focused certification exams.
  • Assist with training and leading student cybersecurity teams for local, regional, national, and international cybersecurity competitions (e.g. Locked Shields).
  • Demonstrate willingness to support the coordination of programmatic MIS, Cybersecurity, AI, and Data Analytics experiential learning projects with industry partners.
  • Demonstrate willingness to actively participate in college and university committees and activities, as well as to perform outreach activities and establish relationships with external partners to provide hands-on experience for students.
  • Demonstrate willingness to supervise student activities outside of the traditional classroom setting.
  • Be fluent in writing and speaking English.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Industry vendor-neutral and vendor specific cybersecurity certifications (i.e. Microsoft, CompTIA, EC-Council, ISC2, ISACA, etc.)
  • Prior practical experience in the areas of information technology, systems administration, cybersecurity, or project management.
  • Extensive experience with Windows & Linux operating systems, systems administration and virtualization software (i.e. SCCM, Hyper-V, ESXi, VSphere, Azure, etc.), automation and scripting languages (i.e. Python, PowerShell, Bash, etc.) cybersecurity tools (Wireshark, Burp Suite, Splunk, Nessus, Snort, etc.)
  • Have earned a Ph.D. before the start date of the position with a dissertation topic focusing on management information systems, information sciences, computer science, business administration, cybersecurity, data analytics, AI/ML, GIS, or a related field
