The Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine is seeking a full-time Cardiothoracic Surgery Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) at the rank of Teaching Associate with an estimated start date in Summer/Early Fall 2024. Teaching Associates hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30) and may be reappointed to subsequent annual terms. Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The ARNP/PA will provide intraoperative and ambulatory care services in partnership with the Cardiac Surgery team at University of Washington – Montlake Campus.
The base salary range for the position will be: $10,834 – $15,391 per month ($130,008 – $184,692 annually) commensurate with years of experience as a licensed ARNP or PA. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Other compensation associated with this position may include payments for vacancy coverage or premiums for factors such as acuity, nights, call should they apply to service. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization.

The Cardiac Surgery Service Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a member of the cardiothoracic surgery multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, fellows, residents, and RNs providing intraoperative and ambulatory care services to patients and families. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing specialty consultation and clinical care primarily for cardiac surgery patients, with particular emphasis on participating as part of the operating and ambulatory care teams.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work on a dedicated cardiothoracic inter-professional team with other established APPs and cardiac surgeons
- Function as first or second assist in the operating room
- Perform independent endoscopic vein and radial artery harvest
- Provide pre-screening evaluation and follow-up care for cardiac surgery patients in the ambulatory care setting
- Assist physician faculty to address clinical issues within scope of practice
- Act as a liaison between the medical and surgical team members in the pursuit of the delivery of exceptional care
- Share in responsibility of APP ambulatory care and OR coverage including 24/7 call
- Coverage of intermittent cardiac surgery OR shifts at the Seattle VA Puget Sound Healthcare System
- Participate in the education of nursing staff and surgical residents
- Participate in quality improvement projects and process improvement activities for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience as an APP in an operative and ambulatory care setting
- Current and valid state Registered Nurse and Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner Licensure for ARNP or Physician Assistant licensure for PA
- Graduate Degree from and accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or accredited Physician Assistant Program
- Nationally certified ARNP/PA with DEA
- Proven excellence working in an interdisciplinary collaborative team environment
- ACLS Certification
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
- Basic computer knowledge and command of basic personal computer skills
