About Heriot-Watt Maths Gym

The Maths Gym is a cross-campus initiative which supports students across all our campuses to strengthen their mathematical and statistical skills and to boost their mathematical confidence. We combine supported study sessions, 1-2-1 tutoring and workshops to deliver a suite of support. In addition, a bank of self-study materials is available on our VLE platform, Canvas.

Established in 2020, the Maths Gym is now looking to grow the team of specialist teachers to meet the global demand for maths and stats support. Working in person, and virtually, the post holder will assist students across all disciplines, campuses and levels to develop their skills in a manner which complements the core teaching of their course.

The role will be based at the Dubai Campus and a working pattern would normally be over 3 days, by arrangement with the Director of the Maths Gym. An induction programme will be delivered to all new academic staff on Heriot-Watt standards and values, and to give practical experience on preparation and delivery of teaching.

You will demonstrate the values of the institution in all you do and, through this, foster these within the College and more widely across the institution.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The person will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Undertake teaching duties within the Maths Gym, both in person and virtually. This will be in collaboration with local teaching staff from different schools.
  • Develop relevant materials, in appropriate formats, to expand our suite of self-study materials. The content and design of such materials will be developed in consultation with colleagues and will complement the mathematical and statistical content across our academic schools.
  • Assist in the upkeep of our website and Canvas pages, ensuring information is relevant and up to date.
  • Provide pastoral support, recognising when to refer a student to other support services available within the University. Play a key role in the delivery and support of an excellent student learning experience.
  • Support the Director in maintaining a record of the service usage.
  • Develop a level of subject expertise in Maths Support and engage with the wider Maths Teaching and Support Community.
  • Assist in the promotion of the service at suitable events such as the Induction week programme and Open days.
