The School of Educational Studies (SES) at the University of Washington Bothell seeks part-time Field Instructor(s) in the Elementary Education teacher certification undergraduate and post-baccalaureate programs for the 2024-25 academic year. The SES teacher certification programs enable student teacher candidates to pursue teacher certification in Elementary Education with a dual endorsement option in either English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) or Special Education (SPED) during the final quarters at UW Bothell.

Field Instructors are part-time faculty appointed into the title of Teaching Associate (0169) and work with elementary education student teacher candidates at K-12 levels, as well as with candidates in the dual endorsement program for ESOL and/or SPED. The appointment is temporary, non-tenure track, and appointed and compensated for the appropriate time period in which candidate observations/evaluations occur.

These positions work closely with student teacher candidates to facilitate connections between academic instruction and student teaching experiences at area K-12 schools and coach and evaluate student teaching experiences. They serve as liaisons in coordinating the functions of the student teaching experience within the expectations of the University. They act as mediators between teacher candidates and building principals and UW Bothell faculty and staff and assume primary responsibility for the assessment of the candidates’ student teaching experiences.

This position works independently and with a team of field instructions, placement coordinators, academic advisors, K12 educators, and faculty, and facilitates individual and small group discussions. They mentor students from underrepresented populations, will work within a public school system, will travel independently to varied school locations and at varying times during the week and group and will be expected to model professional behavior in an educational setting. Successful candidates will be able to work effectively with diverse student and community populations, have experience mentoring, coaching or teaching adults, will have strong organizational and time management skills, and have a commitment and interest in the preparation of beginning teachers and teacher education in public school settings.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide advice and assistance to student teacher candidates as needed. Help solve field- based problems.
  • Meet to discuss expectations and plan the student teaching experience.
  • Maintain close communication with Candidates throughout the year.
  • Communicate with the Candidates and Placement Coordinator about any concerns or issues related to the progress of the Candidates.
  • Evaluate the Candidates at regular intervals through observation and post lesson conferences. Provide written feedback to the Candidates using the UWB Lesson Observation Form as well as narrative summaries of lesson observations.
  • Use the Post-Lesson Conference Guidelines to offer guidance, mentoring, effective supervision, and constructive suggestions in the techniques of teaching.
  • Facilitate field seminars with small groups of Candidates during the teaching internship
  • Refer students to SES, university and other community resources as appropriate.
  • Attend monthly UWB Teacher Certification meetings on campus and share progress reports on Candidates.
  • Participate in Guidance and Support Team meetings as needed.
  • Participate in other School of Educational Studies program events throughout the year such as the Job Search Clinic, student applicant interviews, and other special events.
  • Write a final letter of recommendation for UWB Certification records and for the Candidates’ job searches and complete School District Confidential Reference Forms as needed for Candidates in their job search.
  • Participate in professional development events on campus for cooperating teachers, which are often in the evening, such as co-teaching or edTPA seminars.
  • Engage, as appropriate, in University of Washington teaching, research and service.

Travel to school districts within 30-40 miles of the University of Washington Bothell is required. UW Bothell reimburses mileage at rates according to state policy.

The base salary range for this position will be $6000 – $7,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field
  • At least three years of experience in K-12 teaching at the elementary, middle level and/or secondary level
  • Experience with mentoring, coaching or supervising preservice or beginning teachers (e.g. experience with ESOL and Special Education populations, as an Instructional Coach, TOSA, first year teacher mentor, principal or administrative experience, teacher candidate mentor, etc.)
  • For work with ESOL/SPED Endorsements: WA State K12 endorsement in ESOL (ELL) or SPED (for ESOL/SPED Field Instructors). For ESOL Field Instructors, commensurate experience with ESOL populations may be considered.
  • Ability to use Internet and computer hardware/software tools (Microsoft Office Suite, Google, Canvas)
  • Ability to travel to multiple K12 locations between Mondays and Fridays.
