Position description

UCSF School of Medicine and UC Merced are collaborating to launch a branch medical campus at UC Merced in 2027. This endeavor is intended to educate students from the San Joaquin Valley who are committed to staying in the Valley to practice medicine and meet the needs of their community. As a branch medical campus, UC Merced will deliver the UCSF School of Medicine (SoM) Bridges curriculum. Students will complete Foundations 1 (F1) for 1.5 years at UC Merced. For the subsequent 2.5 years, they will complete Foundations 2 (F2) and Career Launch (CL) at UCSF Fresno. Students will graduate with a degree from the UCSF School of Medicine. We are seeking a core of teaching faculty based at UC Merced who are skillful in educating medical students with the foundational science concepts and experiences that they will need to advance to Foundations 2 and beyond.

The University of California, Merced invites applicants to apply for multiple new Teaching Professor positions starting July 1, 2024. An Assistant Teaching Professor is a faculty position with an emphasis on education. Candidates with expertise in Anatomy, Physiology, or Molecular Biology/Biochemistry are encouraged to apply. This position will be based at UC Merced; and will be dually appointed at UC Merced and UCSF.

UCSF School of Medicine and its regional campuses at UC Merced and UCSF Fresno are collaborating to train physicians for the San Joaquin Valley. The primary focus of this position is preparing for and teaching UCSF medical students at UC Merced. The first cohort of UCSF medical students will matriculate at UC Merced in 2027.

The successful candidate should be knowledgeable about evidence-based pedagogical and assessment methods, creative and resourceful with respect to developing instructional initiatives, and effective in collaborating with faculty and staff.

This position will have primary teaching responsibility for Foundational Science related topics across the longitudinal curriculum of Foundations 1 delivered at UC Merced. They will serve as a core member of an interdisciplinary team to establish and co-lead a teaching effort; as such, they will collaborate with other clinical and teaching faculty. In addition, they will contribute to deliver relevant aspects of Foundational Science teaching during the F2 year at UCSF Fresno. Responsibilities include:

Administrative:

  • In years 1-3, partner with existing UCSF course directors to learn the Bridges curriculum, participate in defined faculty development activities, serve as a member of planning and design committees as needed.
  • Following year three, the primary areas of focus will be teaching, curriculum development, learner assessment, and scholarship.
  • Participate in education-related committees, including course/element administration and standard setting (exam grading).
  • Collaborate with UCSF teams on Assessment, Curriculum, and Evaluation.
  • Collaborate with UC Merced Office of Medical Education to support overall student experience.
  • Participate in the recruitment of lecturers and small group facilitators in collaboration with OME Director.
  • Maintain availability for administration needs during the offering of the course.
  • Participate in curriculum quality improvement activities as appropriate
  • Teaching.
  • Teach foundational science content to medical students in large groups, small groups, laboratory, and other settings.
  • Teach foundational science content to pre-medical students to prepare them for medical school curriculum.
  • Assist with direct teaching needs identified that cannot be filled by recruitment.
  • Maintain availability for students.

Curriculum Development

  • Engage in, and collaborate on, curriculum and program development, pedagogical innovation, and other scholarly and professional activities, including integration of core Bridges principles.
  • Collaborate to include relevant examples from the San Joaquin Valley.
  • Collaborate to ensure ongoing educational improvement.

Learner Assessment

  • Plan and implement assessment strategy (grading assessments, grading committee, etc.), while adhering to overall Bridges program of assessment.
  • Participate in relevant student assessment and student progress review activities.
  • Ensure student completion of required remediation requirements.

Scholarship

  • Develop, assess, and disseminate innovative pedagogy, including educational research and scholarship.

Faculty development

  • Participate in substantial development in medical education and Bridges curriculum prior to the launch of F1 at UC Merced. This will include:
  • Observation, participation, and teaching in Bridges curriculum at UCSF SoM in relevant courses. Some travel to SF will be expected.
  • Observation, participation, and engagement with course administration efforts at UCSF SoM.
  • Participation in relevant faculty development activities to support education, including diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications Basic qualifications Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Anatomy, Physiology, or Molecular Biology/Biochemistry or in a related field. Record of effective teaching at the college or university level. Record of research, scholarship, or other professional achievement and activity. Record of contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstration of success in teaching in a relevant field.
  • Strong record of mentorship and collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in developing an innovative teaching program.
  • Additional qualifications
  • Experience in teaching in a medical school or health professions program.
  • Experience in curriculum design, development, implementation and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in student success initiatives.
  • Commitment to advancing the culture of inclusion and belonging.
