Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), University of Chinese Academy of Sciences
Established in 2019, the Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), University of Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded with the approval of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Zhejiang Provincial Government. It is jointly built by the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) and the Hangzhou Municipal Government. HIAS operates directly under UCAS as its secondary college, is a public institution directly under Hangzhou Municipality, and is recognized as one of Zhejiang Province’s first provincial-level new research and development institutions.
As a branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences system by the West Lake, HIAS adheres to the UCAS motto of “Erudition, Determination, Investigation, and Virtue.” It inherits and carries forward the traditional strength of CAS in “integrating scientific research with education.” Grounded in its founding principles of “High Starting Point, Small but Fine, and Innovation-Oriented,” HIAS implements a “Core with Dual Wings” development strategy. This strategy focuses on talent cultivation as the core, supported by scientific research and innovation & entrepreneurship. It aims to build a technological innovation ecosystem that integrates technology R&D, talent introduction & cultivation, student education, and achievement commercialization. Committed to addressing global S&T frontiers and national development needs, HIAS drives deep industry-academia-research integration through technological innovation to support regional economic and social high-quality development.
Centered on four cutting-edge fields—Physics and Optoelectronics, Life and Health, Intelligent Science and Technology, and Ecological Environment—HIAS has established 8 interdisciplinary secondary schools. These are supported by 16 CAS research institutes and comprise 75 Professor Studios and 25 research platforms. HIAS hosts 4 provincial/ministerial key laboratories:

HIAS has established 4 doctoral programs and 12 master’s programs. It currently has an enrollment of 3,000 master’s and doctoral students and a faculty and staff of 875, including 224 national-level talents. The HIAS Postdoctoral Workstation has been approved as a National-Level Postdoctoral Research Workstation and has gained the independent qualification to recruit postdoctoral researchers.
