Tenure-track Assistant Professor – Inflammation, Metabolism, or Therapeutic Targeting

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position to be filled at the assistant professor level at a salary commensurate with experience ranging from $110,000 to $150,000. Areas of relevant research interest include but are not limited to, molecular mechanisms underlying inflammation or metabolic dysfunction, and identification of novel therapeutic targets for treating human diseases. Additional responsibilities include engaging in the educational programs of the department and service to the institution.

The current research programs in the department combine multifaceted experimental approaches (e.g., biochemistry, molecular genetics, bioinformatics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and glycomics) to address important biological problems with relevance to human health and pathogenesis. The George Washington University (GWU) offers several advanced technical core facilities and shared equipment to support the research community. In addition, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine is supported by the Catherine B. McCormick Endowment that augments research activities and provides bioinformatics assistance.

The department, which is under active expansion, is housed in the same research building as the other basic science departments at the SMHS, including the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology, the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology, and the Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Tropical Medicine. The physical proximity and highly collegial culture of the local research community have been a tremendous impetus to inter-departmental collaborations and programmatic development. In addition, our institution’s close location to the NIH, Children’s National Health System, and other institutions in the Washington DC metropolitan area provides outstanding opportunities for collaboration. Opportunities are also available to collaborate with colleagues in the George Washington University Cancer Center.

Basic Qualifications:  Applicants must possess a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree, a record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications, and a demonstrated potential for extramural funding.
