POSITION TITLE: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Position In English Language Development and Bilingual/Biliteracy in K-12 Education


The College of Education is committed to developing critical anti-racism/social justice scholars and practitioners who recognize that we live and work in diverse institutions and communities. The College offers two Bachelor’s degrees, P/K-16 Teaching, Counseling, and Administrative Credentials, numerous Master’s degrees and a Doctorate in Education.

As a comprehensive College of Education, faculty collaborate with professional communities to prepare educators and school personnel to serve as agents of positive social change. The college gives access to professional careers to students with diverse identities and backgrounds, and contributes to their professional growth. The Teaching Credentials Branch prepares teachers and teacher leaders who are committed to equity, access, and inclusion in culturally and linguistically diverse schools and communities. Our vision is to be the regional leaders in preparing and developing excellent teachers. In collaboration with our schools and communities, teachers prepared at Sacramento State create and sustain equitable inclusive educational environments which are designed to optimize access and student success. The programs’ sequenced and integrated design results in highly focused instruction interwoven with hands-on teaching experiences, sustained mentoring, and personalized advising. Faculty members also provide academic and professional support to local programs, teachers, administrators, and counselors, as well as engage in collaborative or joint research, scholarly projects, presentations, and professional development.


  • Teach courses in the Single Subject, Multiple Subject and Bilingual Authorization Credential programs; 
  • Teach courses focused on integrated and designated English language development methodologies for K-12 preservice candidates; socio-cultural, historical, political and philosophical foundations of bilingual/bicultural/biliterate education; methodologies for developing academic language and disciplinary literacy;
  • Co-plan with faculty instructional teams; provide leadership in developing credential courses in areas of specialization;
  • Participate in accreditation and program improvement activities;
  • Supervise preservice, Bilingual Authorization candidates in the field;
  • Engage in scholarly activities (publications, presentations, etc.);
  • Provide service to the institution (including serving on programmatic, college-wide and University-wide committees) and to the community.
  • Collaborate to support the growth and development of the bilingual authorization pathway for Multiple Subject, Single Subject, and Special Education candidates, including candidate recruitment and retention. 


This is a full-time, tenure track position within the Teaching Credentials Branch of the College of Education. Teaching schedule may include day, afternoon, and evening courses. Faculty members teaching a full load typically teach 3-4 courses per semester and supervise candidates. New faculty will be given release time in their first two years and some faculty may receive units for coordination, or could have release time for work on grants, research, and other special projects.


  • Earned doctorate in Education or Applied Linguistics with an emphasis on language, literacy and culture, second language acquisition, development and pedagogy, applied linguistics, or bilingual education. ABD will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctorate by August, 2024.
  • A minimum of 3 years teaching experience in public-school settings serving English language/emergent bilingual learners.
  • Research or professional development experience in English language/emergent bilingual learner education; specifically, English language development methodologies, assessment, and curriculum design for K-12 English learners, second language acquisition theories, and/or related pedagogies.
  • Knowledge of bilingual education foundations and biliteracy methods specific to both primary and secondary school settings.
  • Knowledge of theories and practices for developing academic language and discipline-specific literacy in grades 7-12 classrooms.
  • Knowledge of linguistically and culturally sustaining pedagogy grounded in principles of equity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving a culturally and ethnically diverse student body.
  • Proficiency in Spanish and/or teaching credential with Bilingual Authorization/Certification.


  • Experience teaching preservice university courses in English language development, bilingual/multicultural education, and/or theory and instruction in disciplinary academic language and literacy for secondary school instruction.
  • Experience mentoring or supervising teaching credential candidates
  • Experience teaching in public school settings, grades 7-12.
  • Experience with instructional technology supporting English learner/emergent bilingual students
  • Knowledge of the CA Common Core State Standards, the California English Language Development Standards and the ELA/ELD Framework for California Public Schools.
  • Demonstrated evidence of working for social justice, educational equity, and multilingualism in public schools and communities.

  6. Name and contact information of three professional references, including one contact who can speak to your teaching effectiveness and one who can speak to your research agenda.


The classification annual salary range for this position is $64,860 – $143,928; the anticipated annual starting salary is $74,642.
