Want to be part of a world-ranking faculty of design and engineering while growing your own skills in design? The University of Bath is seeking a trainee technician for our faculty of Engineering and Design 3D printing and laser cutting laboratory.

Job Description

We have a new opportunity for a Trainee Technician to join the Technical Services team in the faculty of Engineering and Design to support our University 3D printing and Laser cutting workshop.

Based on campus, you will join a team of multi-skilled technicians, who provide prototyping design and manufacturing support to both UG teaching and research within the faculty. Key areas of support include final year degree show projects, Formula Student competition teams and a wide range of postgraduate and Post-Doctorate research activities.

You will receive training in a range of manufacturing and design disciplines including:

  • Laser Cutting
  • 3D Printing – FDM, SLA and Polyjet
  • 3D Scanning
  • CAD Design using both 3D and 2D packages
  • CorelDraw

Support will be provided by the existing technical team to build your skills in many of the above disciplines, in turn supporting colleagues and students within the department and beyond. As this is a student-facing role, you need to be confident working and communicating with a diverse student population.

  • Have a willingness and aptitude to learn new technical processes
  • Understand and be able to assess information relating to design concepts for engineering
  • Have experience of working reliably and efficiently with minimal supervision to appropriate standards and protocols
  • Understand and comply with safe working practices
  • Have a friendly attitude with the ability to communicate across a diverse student population in person and via email

Job Requirements

  • Educated to GCSE level. A levels, B-TEC or degree qualification in a design or engineering field desirable but not essential
  • Ability to communicate well across a wide university community
  • Digital literacy: familiarity with email and Microsoft Suite. Experience with design packages desirable but not essential
  • Able to comply with safe working practices
  • Undertake technical tasks and help provide design solutions
  • Commitment to personal development of skills and learning
