Job Summary

Alive & Kicking Theatre is looking for new Trustees to join its committed and highly engaged Board. We’d love to hear from people with a range of personal and professional skills and interests, who are passionate about supporting children’s creative, social and educational development through drama.

Job Description

Alive & Kicking Theatre Company has been delivering interactive drama and literacy projects – ‘drama adventures’ – to children in primary schools for over 30 years. We also deliver some projects to children and families in community settings. We employ our own distinctive method, which gives children power and creative freedom within the dramatic process. We work almost exclusively in Leeds, Bradford and the region, and focus on schools in disadvantaged communities.

The company is run by a small core team of regular freelance staff together with a Board of committed Trustees, and we are joined by a number of freelance associates who help us deliver our projects. Everyone working with the company is locally based.

We are currently looking for new Trustees to join us, enriching the current Board’s skills and experience base and ‘sharing the load’. We welcome enquiries from anyone aged 18+, who lives or works in the region, from any community and from any background.

Full details can be found in the Trustee information pack (on request) but, broadly, responsibilities of Alive & Kicking Trustees, are to:

* provide strategic direction to the company;

* help the company make creative and business decisions by asking questions we might not have considered;

* support and advise us on operational matters;

* help ensure the company fulfils its legal obligations as a charity.

For Trustees, this is an opportunity to demonstrate your passion for drama and literacy; for theatre as education; and for the benefits of creative opportunities to children in primary schools. It is also an opportunity to develop personal understanding of many aspects of business management, organisational development, running a charity, working in education, and more; to work alongside people from a range of sectors; and to put your skills to good use, playing a dynamic part in something that makes a real difference in children’s lives.

Job Requirements

We would welcome enquiries from prospective Trustees of all backgrounds and experience, including those with one or more of the following skills and interests:

  • Arts and cultural sector
  • Community leadership
  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Higher education and research
  • Marketing and communications
  • Health & Safety
  • Human Resources
  • Local government

This list is by no means exhaustive or exclusive. We also recognise that some people may have experience in more than one area. Our current Trustees bring a range of expertise including in Primary Education, Safeguarding, fiction writing and Finance.

All Trustees must be willing to provide details of an existing enhanced DBS check or to undergo one before appointment.
