Tuning of quantum magnets

A bit of well-managed stress could make one’s life much more dynamic and interesting. Mechanical stress to materials can also have significant impact on their electronic and magnetic properties, which are largely determined by atomic arrangement and electronic distribution.

In this project, we will squeeze or stretch certain materials to create new quantum states of matter. In particular, we aim to create a long-sought ‘quantum spin liquid’ state, where the electronic spins are quantum entangled such that they remain ‘dynamic; down to absolute zero temperature. This unique quantum state is predicted to be highly robust against noises, thus will serve as a material platform for quantum computation. The research group is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as SQUID magnetometry and Physical Property Measurement System, and the forthcoming ultra-low-temperature NMR system as a unique-in-the-UK Strategic Infrastructure, which the student will benefit from.

This is an experimental physics project with opportunities for the student to gain hands-on expertise in scientific instrumentation and advanced data analysis and fundamentals of quantum matter.
