Background:

In support of the Arab Republic of Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the National Strategy for the Empowerment of Egyptian Women (NSEEW), the work of the UN Women Egypt Country Office (ECO) is grounded in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA). Under the Egypt/UN Cooperation Framework, UN Women implements its triple mandate of supporting normative standard-setting to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment, working with the Government of Egypt, civil society and the private sector on implementing international and national commitments and best practices, and strengthening UN system coordination in this regard. Since the early 1990s, UN Women ECO has consolidated its expertise, partnerships and investments around three main areas of work: women’s leadership and system-wide support to advancing gender equality; women’s economic empowerment; and eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls, including harmful practices.

Under the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2023-2027), the ECO’s country portfolio continues to focus on the above, utilizing the following strategies: supporting regional and global normative for a and related commitments; drawing from global standards and practices; contributing to evidenced-based, nationally-led legislative reform and knowledge development; supporting all women’s access to skills, services, and networks; supporting platforms and partnerships for women’s enhanced voice and leadership, including young women, rural women and women living with disabilities; developing nationally specific innovative financing mechanisms and tools, including gender-responsive budgeting; and advancing nationally and community- owned change in the attitudes and behaviors which may limit the advancement of women and girls, with the close engagement of men and boys as champions.

To achieve the strategic and programmatic objectives, UN Women Egypt’s Communications Unit develops and executes goal-oriented communications and outreach strategies. In this regard, UN Women Egypt seeks to recruit a professional designer to support in developing innovative designs for various knowledge products and communication materials under the different programmes.

The Consultant will be offered a ‘Special Service Assignment’ contract, up to 30 days for 1 year; however, the consultant shall respond to unexpected needs and deadlines, whenever relevant.

Objective of the Assignment: 

Reporting to the Programme Specialists and Communications Analyst and under the overall supervision of the Deputy Country Representative the consultant will support the design of knowledge products and communication materials developed by the unit. The consultant will conceptualize, design, and layout high-quality innovative and creative materials (print and online), such as reports, policy briefs, fact sheets, web, and social media-based campaigns, advocacy initiatives, promotional and training materials as assigned.

Description of Responsibilities /Scope of Work

The designer will be particularly supporting various programmes, as he/she will be required to work a total of 30 days (GAC: 10 days, EU: 5 days, Italy: 5 days, COMMS: 10 days) throughout the one-year contract. The 30 days will be divided as follows:

  • “Women’s Economic Empowerment for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth” Programme (RABEHA): 10 days
  • “Ending Violence against Women” Programme: 5 days
  • “Socio-Economic Empowerment of Rural Women in Assiut and Sohag Governorates” programme: 5 days
  • Corporate Communications: 10 days

Throughout the assignment, the consultant is expected to: 

  • Conceptualize, design and layout of high-quality innovative, creative, and attention-grabbing materials, for print and web-based communications, such as infographics, publications, illustrations, social media campaigns/templates/cards and advocacy materials, promotional materials, and any other communications materials that require creative graphic design.
  • Conduct quality control to ensure accurate and high-quality work
  • Modify, revise, and edit materials as required, in consultation with relevant UN Women staff.
  • Prepare final media files for online distribution and printing, as requested.
  • Carry out ad-hoc graphic design related work as instructed by the supervisor.

Functional Competencies:

Required Qualifications

Education and Certification: 

  • A minimum of bachelor’s degree in Multimedia Arts, Information Design, Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Mass Communications, Integrated Marketing Communication, or related studies required.
  • Additional certifications would be an advantage.

Experience: 

  • Minimum 6 years of extensive experience in design of digital and online campaigns, brand identity design, publications design, social media design, video production, and multimedia production; is required.
  • Excellent creative/design skills and creative approach to communications and gender equality will be an asset.
  • Solid experience working on conception, design, packaging, production, and dissemination of communication products to a variety of audiences and understanding of channels of dissemination required.
  • Experience working with the UN System is an asset.
  • Experience and understanding in gender equality and women economic empowerment will be an asset.

Languages: 

  • Fluency (written and verbal) in Arabic and English, required.

Evaluation Criteria

Individual consultants will be evaluated based on the following:

  • Criteria 1: A minimum of bachelor’s degree in Multimedia Arts, Information Design, Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Mass Communications, Integrated Marketing Communication, or related studies. Additional certifications would be an advantage. (25 points)
  • Criteria 2: At least 6 years of extensive experience in design of digital and online campaigns, brand identity design, publications design, social media design, and multimedia production (25 points)
  • Criteria 3: Solid experience working on conception, design, packaging, production, and dissemination of communication products to a variety of audiences, and understanding of channels of dissemination (30 points)
  • Criteria 4: Experience working with the UN System (10 points)
  • Criteria 5: Experience and understanding in gender equality and women economic empowerment (10 points)
