Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Maimana Field Office. The Assistant Political Affairs Officer reports to the Head of Field Office in the duty station.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Assistant Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Gathers and analyzes information contained in communications and publications from different sources, including the press; maintains up-to-date knowledge of developments and trends relating to political and other mandated issues. • Assists the Head of Field Office with preparing draft briefing notes, background papers and talking points. Prepares summaries of articles from a wide range of sources and drafts a variety of correspondence, and inputs to reports. • Monitors political, security, socio-economic, including governance, and other relevant developments in the assigned area. • Contributes to political, humanitarian and economic efforts and programmes. • Maintains contact and active engagement with UN agencies, non-governmental organizations, local authorities, civil society and other key actors in the assigned area, in support of mandate implementation. • Creates databases that track project progress and provides other information relevant to assigned area. • Serves as Officer-in-Charge during absences of the Head of Field Office. Contributes to the collection and analysis of data and identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Documents requirements and background information used for data analysis. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in Political Science, Management or Development, or in a related fields is required. A first-level degree (bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. The minimum year of relevant experience is reduced to zero (0) years for candidates who possess a master’s or higher university degree in political science, international relations, public administration, management or development.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English, Dari and Pashto is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
