This project will investigated Reynolds scaling effects to help support the development of future aircraft.
In the development of future aircraft, Reynolds number scaling effects present a critical challenge, particularly when transitioning from small-scale wind tunnel models to full-scale aircraft. These scaling effects often lead to discrepancies in aerodynamic predictions, introducing uncertainties in key performance metrics such as lift, drag, and fuel efficiency. Inaccurate predictions can cascade into suboptimal designs, ultimately impacting mission effectiveness, operational costs, and sustainability – areas of growing importance for next-generation air systems. Furthermore, the inability to accurately replicate full-scale flow conditions in wind tunnel testing increases the risk of costly design modifications during later stages of development.
To address these challenges, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are essential for better accounting for Reynolds number scaling. High-fidelity CFD tools, complemented by turbulence modeling techniques that incorporate scale effects, provide a more accurate representation of flow physics. These simulations must work in synergy with improved wind tunnel testing methodologies to more closely mimic full-scale conditions. Incorporating these approaches early in the design process via appropriate data fusion techniques ensures a robust and reliable understanding of scaling effects, reducing risks and accelerating the design-to-production timeline.
