Deliverable A: Technical advice Technical advice and input provided on the research outline, the identification of relevant literature, and the selection of four regions where subsequent project activities will be developed. Deliverable B: Finalization of data collection tools Qualitative and quantitative data collection tools are adapted to local contexts. Deliverable C: Stakeholders mapping List of stakeholders to be involved in the data collection. Deliverable D: Collection of primary data Primary data are collected following the research questions and through the administration of the previously defined research tools. Deliverable E: Analytical input on comprehensive research report Selected sections are drafted, and technical advice is provided on the draft comprehensive research report.

Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI’s goals are: • to advance understanding of crime-related problems; • to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; • to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; • to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance. UNICRI is currently implementing a project on the intersections between terrorism and organized crime to increase knowledge on how the nexus between these two phenomena is manifested in the African continent. The research findings on the topic will feed into tailored training and empowerment activities for local, national and regional stakeholders. Linkages between terrorist and organized crime groups represent a threat to peace and security, furthering conflict and fragility, and undermining development efforts. For more information: https://unicri.it/ Under the supervision of the Programme Officer and in close collaboration with the project team, the incumbent will perform the following tasks: o Desk research: -Contribute to the identification of relevant literature -Provide feedback on the research outline -Contribute input to the draft desk research report -Provide technical advice on the selection of four regions where subsequent project activities will be developed o Primary research: -Provide support on methodology and tools for data collection, in particular oversee required adaptation of interview guides and questionnaires developed by UNICRI to tailor them to local contexts -Suggest relevant stakeholders to be involved in data collection, including, for example, representatives of communities, local authorities and national institutions -Contribute to primary data collection through a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods (when possible), also including by participating in field missions (when applicable) and/or by training, with UNICRI staff, other experts involved in data collection o Analysis of the data and elaboration of the report: -Provide technical advice on the approach for data analysis -Contribute inputs to the drafting of the comprehensive research report, including on the ToC, possible case-studies and drafting of selected sections -Provide feedback on the first draft of the comprehensive research report
Qualifications/special skills
Advanced University degree (Master’s or equivalent) in political science, justice & security, criminology, social sciences, or equivalent discipline is required. A first level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. A PhD in relevant fields is desirable. At least five (5) years of working experience in conducting research on criminal justice and security-related topics is required. Previous experience in conducting research on the African continent is required. Previous experience on counter-terrorism and preventing and countering violent extremism is desirable. Previous experience in participating in complex research settings is desirable.
Languages
For the position advertised, fluency in English and French is required.
