Position Summary / Career Interest:

Provides charge nurse responsibilities, including assignments, management of throughput, staffing to matrix, and responding to patient and staff needs. Manages a patient care assignment as indicated by patient care needs. Assists with hiring, education and performance evaluation of the staff. Works with the Nurse Manager and Human Resources in performance management counseling and discipline of staff. Instructs staff and ensures compliance with standards through daily on-going monitoring and performance management. Serves as a role model and mentor for excellence in clinical practice and patient and employee satisfaction. Takes personal responsibility for achieving productivity targets and budget compliance. Has primary involvement and responsibility for unit performance improvement activities and outcomes.

27 bed unit. The nursing staff use technology, such as telemetry, and have a wealth of resources to provide the most technically advanced care to the patient population served on this unit. Trauma patients receive care for injuries sustained in motor vehicle crashes and falls, as well as injuries related to personal violence. General surgery patients encompass include a wide variety of laparoscopic and open abdomen and bowel procedures. Plastics patients include those in need of complex wound care and wound reconstruction.

Majority of our patients are trauma (car accidents, falls, assault victims, victims of violent crimes). Second biggest population is acute care surgery (small bowel obstructions, hernia repairs, gall bladder/appendix removals). Small population of bariatric surgery every other Wednesday (gastric sleeve surgery, gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y). The trauma provider team is led by Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. Biggest nursing focus for patients is supporting them in progressing with their mobility, pain control, and drain/wound management. We have very close relationships with our Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists.

Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

JOB REQUIREMENTS Required: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Nursing Registered Nurse in State of Kansas Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtained within 14 days of hire. As a condition of your employment and continued employment with the health system, you are required to secure a Nurse Compact License (NCL) within 60 days of your date of hire. This will enable you to perform your job duties not only in Kansas, but other compact states. You will be responsible for any expenses you incur in securing this license, and must provide your manager with evidence of this license before the sixty-day period expires. If you fail to secure the NCL as required, you will be immediately removed from the work schedule and placed on an unpaid administrative leave, until we can understand the reasons for your non-compliance. Further failure to comply with the licensing requirement will result in your end of employment with the health system. Preferred: 2 years of clinical experience Professional Nursing Certification
