Job Description

Overview:

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) offers a one-year, dedicated fellowship in Burn and Acute Care Surgery. Based at the South Carolina Burn Center – one of the largest and most comprehensive burn centers in the Southeast – this position provides extensive clinical and research experience in the management of burn injuries, acute surgical critical care, and complex wound care. Fellows will develop advanced competency in all aspects of burn surgery, including acute resuscitation, operative burn care, reconstructive procedures, and the multidisciplinary management of critically ill surgical patients.

Educational Objectives:

• Achieve high competency in burn surgery, including excision and grafting, wound management, inhalation injury care, and long-term reconstructive planning.
• Develop expertise in the management of the critically ill surgical patient, including ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, nutritional support, and infection control in the burn-critical care setting.
• Understand all phases of burn patient care, from initial resuscitation and acute operative management through rehabilitation, scar management, and reconstructive follow-up.
• Conduct bench or clinical research relevant to burn surgery or acute care surgery, with the goal of producing at least one publishable paper by the fellowship’s end.
• Participate in outreach, prevention, or advocacy efforts in conjunction with burn center infrastructure
• Develop expertise in skin & soft tissue billing and coding
• Develop an understanding of burn center operations, including organizational structure, care delivery systems, and underlying economic principles

Key Responsibilities:

• Actively participate in direct patient care, including daily rounds in the burn intensive care unit and burn ward, operative procedures, consultations, and outpatient follow-up.
• Manage acute burn resuscitation, operative debridement, autografting, wound coverage, and post-operative care under the supervision of fellowship faculty.
• Participate in the burn call schedule rotation with faculty supervision
• Participate in MUSC’s Surgery Grand Rounds and burn-specific educational conferences.
• Collaborate on research projects with the guidance of MUSC faculty, resulting in publishable contributions to the field of burn surgery or acute care surgery.
• Engage in multidisciplinary team meetings involving nursing, physical and occupational therapy, nutrition, social work, and rehabilitation services integral to burn patient care.

Supervision:

The fellowship operates under the supervision of faculty within the South Carolina Burn Center and MUSC’s Division of Acute Care Surgery, ensuring comprehensive clinical mentorship and research guidance throughout the fellowship year.

Patient Population:

Fellows will care for a diverse range of critically ill and injured patients, including those with major thermal injuries, chemical and electrical burns, inhalation injuries, toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), complex wound infections, traumatic wounds, and acute/chronic wounds, skin conditions of other etiologies, and patients requiring acute surgical critical care. The South Carolina Burn Center serves as the regional referral center for burn injuries across South Carolina and neighboring states, providing fellows exposure to a high-volume, acuity-rich clinical environment.

Education and Resources:

• Access to the South Carolina Burn Center’s dedicated burn intensive care unit and operative facilities.
• Weekly educational conferences including Surgery Grand Rounds and burn-specific case conferences.
• Collaboration with MUSC’s multidisciplinary burn team, including burn-trained nurses, wound care specialists, rehabilitation therapists, and nutritional support staff.
• Opportunities for simulation-based training and procedural skills development.

Qualifications:

All applicants must have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited residency in General Surgery. Applicants must be board eligible or board certified in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care at the time of application. Fellowship candidates with prior burn surgery exposure or critical care training are encouraged to apply.
