Job Description

US Medical Affairs (USMA), Executive Director, Virology Medical Sciences – Field-based

Job Overview:

The Executive Director (ED) US Medical Affairs Virology Medical Science is a key member of the USMA leadership team, reporting to the VP of USMA, Virology, field based in the US. This role is responsible for executing and driving virology and liver strategies and plans of action to the medical science teams. As an integral part of the US Virology Medical Affairs team, the ED will oversee, develop and maintain the tenor of Gilead’s scientific communications to the community of US healthcare professionals and advocates, ensuring the latest scientific contents are available for the virology medical science teams to support the needs of the US healthcare providers. Experience with launch planning and external collaborations will also be essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the USMA Virology TA Strategy leaders and translate US strategies and POAs in HIV treatment, HIV prevention, liver and covid-19 into field planning and tactics
  • Provide leadership and guidance of US field excellence and best in class scientific engagements to the US virology medical science teams.
  • Define, clarify and manage the team’s priorities and promote collaboration across USMA field virology teams and with internal and external stakeholders
  • Serve as US medical head for matters related to US medical field operations and capabilities, supported by various functions within Global Medical Strategic Operations’ (GMSO) Center of Excellence
  • Manage and professionally develop therapeutic area US field directors
  • Ensure that all interactions and activities across the team adhere to corporate and US healthcare compliance guidance, including those related to clinical trials, scientific interactions with internal and external groups, and responses to unsolicited requests for medical/scientific information
  • Provide inspirational leadership to the USMA Virology team by creating an environment of mutual respect, shared goals, clear responsibilities, and talent development.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • M.D., D.O., PhD (in life sciences), PharmD, NP or PA with over 12 years of extensive experience in hepatology or infectious diseases; a minimum of 8 years of relevant medical affairs experience is required including previous work experience as a medical field director.
  • Leadership skills (proactive, strategic, creates a highly accountable team culture, provides clear direction) with the ability to evaluate competing priorities to arrive at an appropriate decision, must be demonstrated
  • Collaborative, team-based approach; ability to network and partner with internal and external stakeholders, including medical thought-leaders and a wide range of healthcare professionals
  • Translate scientific and clinical data and territory/regional information to various groups to achieve the identified business goals of the company
  • Understand and apply regulatory and business conduct requirements for field-based personnel and PhRMA guidelines, including geographic regulatory related guidelines
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and resources
  • Able to work with a level of autonomy and independence and able to manage budgeting/oversight of operational expenses
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal, relationship-building and negotiating communication skills
  • Travel within the US for field engagements, conference attendance and internal meetings, a minimum of 60% of the time and occasionally with short notice

The salary range for this position is: $288,575.00 – $373,450.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
