VBEMS Van Buren Emergency Medical Services
VBEMS EMT – Basic or Paramedic or Paramedic (CC) – PRN Status
The EMT-Basic requires Completion of State of Michigan approved EMT-Basic and Current State of Michigan Emergency Medical Technician Licensure in good standing at the EMT-Basic. Serves as a member of the ambulance crew. EMT-Basic is responsible for the delivery of patient care and safe transport on all emergency and non-emergency transports.
The EMT – Paramedic requires Completion of State of Michigan approved Paramedic and Current State of Michigan Emergency Medical Technician Licensure in good standing at the Paramedic Level and is a member of healthcare team that will assess and provide the pre-hospital medical care and transportation for patients of all age groups on an emergency and non-emergency basis. The position requires a variety of technical, quality improvement and educational activities to ensure that quality care is delivered. He/She will maintain and upgrade competencies through reading, attending in-services, workshops, and other continuing educational programs specific to the position. The Paramedic is responsible to the Project Medical Director or designee in the performance of duties in accordance with established Van Buren County Medical Protocol including being responsible to the Crew Supervisor in the performance of duties in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and the overall performance of duties and responsibilities and the Dispatcher for run assignments.
Salary range will be different for Paramedic and Paramedic (CC) if meets Paramedic and Paramedic (CC)qualifications.
Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Requirements and Responsibilities:
High School Graduate. Completion of State of Michigan approved EMT-Basic or Paramedic. Completion of clinical time required by EMT or Paramedic training program and a minimum of an additional 40 hours ride time with VBEMS, Inc. Current State of Michigan Emergency Medical Technician Licensure (must be in good standing and valid in the state of Michigan) at the Paramedic Level; Possess a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with a good driving record (no convictions and no more than 6 points in the past 2 years)
Driving your own vehicle on a regularly scheduled basis to perform business on behalf of Bronson is required for this position and will require successfully pass of MVR check after an offer of employment has been made but prior to the employee’s start date. Proof of valid auto insurance on that vehicle that will be driven while on duty for Bronson is required. It is the employee’s responsibility to submit auto insurance renewals before current coverage expires to their supervisor. It is also the employee’s responsibility to update their auto insurance coverage with Bronson if a different vehicle will be driven to perform business on behalf of Bronson.
Ability to read and write English language. Must have legible handwriting. Ability to speech Spanish desirable. Possess the ability to work under pressure in difficult situations. Mental ability to assess quickly a scene and patient, to make decisions regarding resources needed and level of medical care needed. Work which produces levels of mental/visual fatigue which are typical of jobs that perform a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines. Work may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time. Job definitely requires high levels of strength and/or stamina to regularly lift weights up to 100 pounds and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects. • Render patient care to the level of licensure and level of training consistent with Van Buren County Medical Control treatment protocol and as directed by the local Medical Control. • Complete all required paperwork, e.g. run sheets, billing sheets, etc. before leaving shift each day. • Maintain current licensure & certifications as required by the corporation, the State of Michigan, and the Van Buren County Medical Control Board. • Provide overall direction to all EMTS of lower licensure and seniority on ambulance calls and transports. • Report all incidents and/or accidents in writing in a timely fashion to the Crew Supervisor or General Manger. • Participate in community education and public service/public relations events as scheduled by VBEMS. • Complete daily duties upon arriving on shift and before leaving shift each day. • Complete routine and basic maintenance of the building and grounds as scheduled and/or assigned. • Attend monthly Run Reviews conducted by the Van Buren County Medical Control Authority. • Attend VBEMS company meetings 75% of the time. • Other duties as assigned.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
1. Description:
a) An EMT can function as a crew member on a BLS, LALS or ALS ambulance. They may also provide immediate response to medical emergencies and provides initial care in preparation for Ambulance arrival
2. Scope of Practice:
a) Provides BLS care as defined by VBMCA protocols. Functions as a second provider on an LALS vehicle under the direction of an AEMT or higher; or a Paramedic II on an ALS vehicle.
3. Specific Requirements:
a) Complete an agency orientation that has been approved by VBMCA
b) Successful completion of a VBMCA approved field-training program.
c) Credentialing requirements as defined by VBCMCA.
d) Must complete 30 contacts to reach EMT Level I.
Paramedic in Training:
1. Description:
a) The probationary paramedic can function as a crew member on a BLS, LALS or ALS ambulance, All Paramedics must enter the VBMCA EMS system with this status. Special consideration for previous experience or exceptional performance may be considered for accelerated training status at the discretion of the Medical Director.
2. Scope of Practice:
a) While partnered with a Paramedic Field Instructor (PFI), the probationary paramedic functions within the parameters of the field-training program. The probationary paramedic may provide paramedic level care at the discretion and under the supervision of a VBMCA approved PFI.
b) The probationary paramedic may not function at the paramedic level unless partnered with an VBMCA approved PFI. In the absence of a PFI the probationary paramedic will function at the EMT level.
3. Specific requirements:
a) Successful completion of a VBMCA approved field-training program.
b) Credentialing requirements as defined by:
Paramedic: Minimum 50 ALS patient contacts. All required certification and training requirements completed, as outlined in the Van Buren Pre-hospital Care Credentialing Protocol, and any assigned trainings by the Education Coordinator/Supervisor. All Skills Sheets completed and signed. Completed Protocol Test with a passing score of 85%, closed book.
a) All time requirements and or shifts must be met.
b) FTE workbook must be completed and front page must be signed by assigned Field Trainer and Education Coordinator.
c) The VBCMCA (or their designee) must be satisfied with the candidate’s proficiency.
d) Field Trainer must attest that all sections, and subsections in this workbook have been covered to VBCMCA satisfaction, and the completed workbook with cover page will be placed in the candidate’s personal file.
e) All AEMT, and Paramedic candidate’s must perform a mega code in the presence of the VBCMCA (or their designee) to the satisfaction of the VBCMCA.
f) Failure to complete any of the following will result in the extension of the probation. Extensions will be made in 3 month or 30 shifts (24hr), 60 shifts (12hr) increments. If after the 2nd extension the candidate has not completed the FTE program to the satisfaction of VBEMS or the VBCMCA candidate will be released from employment.

Paramedic I
1. Description:
a) The Paramedic I has successfully completed a VBMCA approved field-training program and can function as a crewmember on a BLS, LALS or ALS ambulance.
2. Scope of Practice:
a) The Paramedic I may function as a paramedic in the VBMCA EMS system in accordance with VBMCA protocols. The paramedic I must be partnered with a paramedic I or higher credentialed provider on an ALS ambulance.
3. Specific Requirements:
a) Experience gained outside the VBMCA system will be considered at the discretion of VBMCA.
b) Successful completion of a VBMCA approved field-training program.
c) Current licensure, certifications, and competencies as described in VBCMCA Protocols.
Paramedic II
1. Description:
a) The Paramedic II is an experienced paramedic who has demonstrated excellent clinical judgment and skill and can function as a crew member on a BLS, LALS or ALS vehicle. The Paramedic II has demonstrated the ability to function independently in critical situations.
2. Scope of Practice:
a) The Paramedic II may function independently as a paramedic in the VBMCA EMS system in accordance with VBMCA protocols. The Paramedic II may be partnered with an EMT or higher credentialed provider on an ALS ambulance.
3. Specific Requirements:
a) Experience gained outside the VBMCA system will be considered at the discretion of VBMCA.
b) Successful completion of a VBMCA approved field-training program
c) Current licensure, certifications, and competencies as described in VBCMCA Protocols.

a) Experience gained outside the VBMCA system will be considered at the discretion of VBMCA.
b) Successful completion of a VBMCA approved field-training program
c) Current licensure, certifications, and competencies as described in VBCMCA Protocols.
4. Must have and maintain Critical care Training.
