In San Francisco, Homebridge provides nearly 1/2 million hours of in-home care to more than 1,000 complexly-diagnosed IHSS MediCAL beneficiaries each year, with a staff of more than 300 caregivers. The agency is also the major provider of training courseware to IHSS Career Pathways, a statewide program for government-funded in-home caregivers.

Position Summary

At Homebridge, we are pioneering a Vocational English as a Second Language Home Care Immersion Training Program. This initiative is designed to bolster the workforce by offering immersive, on-the-job English language training to home care providers. Funded by a generous two-year, $5 million grant from the California Workforce Development Board, this program is set to transform the lives of 150 new in-home care providers in San Francisco. By providing paid VESL home care training along with ongoing language support, we aim to overcome employment barriers for talented candidates whose first language is not English. 

As a VESL Instructor, you’ll be a champion of English Language Learners helping them to hone new language skills, empowering them to thrive in their chosen careers, and fully participate within their communities.

This position is funded via a grant that expires in April 2026. Appointment renewal for the following grant cycle will be based upon available grant funding and performance.

Essential Job Functions

  • Plan and deliver engaging and effective English language instruction customized to meet the vocational needs of students
  • Develop lesson plans that integrate language learning with vocational content and skills
  • Conduct ongoing assessments to evaluate students’ language proficiency levels and monitor their progress over time
  • Foster a nurturing and inclusive learning environment that encourages student participation and engagement
  • Offer personalized feedback and guidance to students to aid in their language development and vocational readiness
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues to ensure program effectiveness and alignment with educational objectives
  • Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and stakeholders to provide support and promote student success
  • Actively participate in professional development opportunities to continually enhance teaching skills and expand knowledge in the field. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Thorough understanding of English language teaching methodologies and principles, with knowledge of TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or related fields
  • Familiarity with vocational education principles and practices, including knowledge of industry-specific terminology and communication norms
  • Understanding of curriculum development and assessment techniques tailored to vocational English language instruction
  • Awareness of cultural diversity and sensitivity, including an understanding of cultural nuances in language learning

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with students from diverse backgrounds and facilitate a supportive learning environment
  • Ability to adapt teaching strategies to accommodate various learning styles and levels of English proficiency among students
  • Proficiency in utilizing technology for teaching purposes, including familiarity with educational software and online resources
  • Excellent organizational skills to develop and implement curriculum plans, track student progress, and provide timely feedback
  • Collaboration skills to work effectively with colleagues, administrators, and stakeholders in program development and implementation

Abilities

  • Capacity to assess language proficiency levels and tailor instruction to meet vocational language goals
  • Flexibility to adjust teaching methods and materials based on ongoing assessment and student feedback
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment, contributing to a positive and cooperative workplace culture

Education and Experience

While candidates possessing a Bachelor’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Education, or a related field are preferred, we enthusiastically encourage applicants with significant professional experience that aligns with the educational requirements. Additionally, familiarity with vocational education principles and practices is highly valued. 

Work Environment 

This position is hybrid-remote, primarily sedentary, working at a desk in a temperature-controlled office, in modular office space or an individual office. Instruction of students will be in-person. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

San Francisco Pay Range

$45—$45 USD
