Job Description:

Veterinary Technician 1 – Teaching

This position performs daily tasks related to the operation of both the surgical training center laboratory as well as the clinical skills laboratory in the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Job Responsibilities:

40% – Correctly perform sterile processing of surgical instruments and equipment by decontaminating, assembling, and inspecting equipment and instruments. Accurately and safely operating sterilizers and performing biological and integrator testing while maintaining record keeping systems.

20% – Serve as a circulating operating room technician and clinical skills technician for clinical and surgical skills labs, with an emphasis on surgical skills. Tasks include but are not limited to, actively monitoring participants in labs to ensure that proper technique is maintained, assist and/or guide others in transporting veterinary patients to and from the operating room, properly position patients for given procedures. Prepare the operating room and clinical skills lab for use with the appropriate equipment/instruments needed for surgical or diagnostic procedures.

20% – Maintain the laboratories in a state of readiness for use by assisting in cleaning and sanitation of cages, kennels, and the kennel room between laboratories. Assist and maintain the general overall cleanliness of the surgical training center and the clinical skills laboratory, including equipment. Be knowledgeable of rules and regulations for both the clinical skills laboratory and the surgical training center spaces.

10% – Assist with all aspects of animal use in the laboratories, including but not limited to, transport of cadaveric specimens and preparation of the aforementioned specimens for lab use. Assist with performance of daily operations of the surgical training laboratory and the clinical skills laboratory, including but not limited to, assisting the laboratory managers, house officers, clinicians, and students with patient care, emergencies, and procedures.

10% – Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree OR Associate’s degree in veterinary technology OR CVT or equivalent OR 3 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.

Veterinary Technician 2 – Teaching

The veterinary technician in this position will assist in instruction of students (DVM, veterinary technician) and advanced trainees (interns and residents) in technical skills related to the practice of veterinary medicine, with a focus on anesthetic skills

Job Responsibilities:

40% – Provide anesthesia, surgical nursing support, and post-operative recovery for instruction of veterinary anesthesia and surgery (e.g., DVM students, veterinary technician students, house officers, foreign graduates).

30% – Instruct veterinary students, veterinary technology students, house officers, and foreign graduates in clinical skills, with an emphasis on anesthetic techniques. Set up and administer OSCEs

10% – Inventory and assist with ordering anesthesia related supplies. Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot anesthetic equipment within the laboratory space.

10% – Assist with all aspects of animal use in the lab, including transport of cadaveric specimens and preparation of the aforementioned specimens for lab use.

10% – Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree with 3 years of applicable experience OR Associate’s degree in veterinary technology with 2 years of applicable experience OR CVT or equivalent with 2 years of applicable experience OR 5 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties OR 2 years of experience as a Veterinary Technician 1 at LSU SVM

Special and Physical Qualifications (All Levels):

Vehicle Operation – University employees whose principal responsibilities of employment include operating a vehicle, performing maintenance on a vehicle, or supervising any public employee who operates or maintains a vehicle and positions with an expectation to travel will require an MVR and are subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

Safety and Security Sensitive Job – Safety and security-sensitive positions are defined as those positions where any form of substance abuse may affect University activities through unsafe work behavior/performance or error in judgment; or where substance abuse could jeopardize the safety and well-being of employees, other personnel, or the general public, or cause significant damage to University property. This includes positions requiring firearms, access to controlled substances, handling hazardous material, operating heavy equipment or machinery, etc. These positions are subject to drug screens per PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

FERPA – As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.

Physical Requirements –

Required to be capable of lifting 50+ pounds, standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the shoulder, vision near sight, vision far sight, climbing, crawling, twisting, pushing/pulling, grasping, and squatting.
