Positions provide skilled veterinary technical support, assist clinicians and fourth-year students in all aspects of patient care including, but not limited to, maintaining daily patient records, recording procedures, medications and general work-up of patients. Must be able to use electronic medical records system to accurately reflect patient charges and medical records. May order, track and maintain supplies of pharmaceuticals and consumable inventory. May teach/lead students in the professional degree program.

Required Qualifications:
Associate’s Degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited school of veterinary technology OR Equivalent education and experience as defined by the Washington State Department of Health Veterinary Technician licensing requirements; AND must be licensed as Veterinary Technician in the State of Washington within six months of hire.

Agricultural Veterinary Technician – This position works with agricultural animals such as cows, llamas, alpacas, sheep, goats and pigs, both as in-patients and as part of the ambulatory service. Our agricultural service works closely with two dairies, as well as cares for sick or injured animals in the WSU teaching herds. The Ag Animal Technician will help coordinate the daily work schedule of the Ag Animal service as well as provide veterinary technical support in the surgical care and treatment of all associated species of the service. Responsibilities include administering anesthetic injections and medications, drawing blood, performing routine radiology, collecting specimens, and monitoring vital signs for veterinarians and clinicians involved in agricultural animal health care and instruction. This position will also assist in explaining the more basic techniques to the fourth-year veterinary students and personnel. The position also includes ordering and maintaining inventory for the service, recording procedures performed on patient records, and helping enter charges for client billing.
Radiology Veterinary Technician – The primary responsibility for this position will be to provide veterinary technical support by performing CAT scan examinations of all species (large, small and exotic), including post-mortem specimens and inanimate objects. Includes acquiring diagnostic imaging studies in a timely manner and be able to adapt them to individual patient need based on the requested procedure and patient cooperation. May include instructing and orienting residents in basic equipment operations. It will administer contrast media and pharmaceuticals under clinician direction and ensure appropriate CAT scan safety protocols are followed by faculty, residents, interns, and students. It will perform routine quality control procedures and scheduled maintenance when needed on the equipment, practice and teach good patient handling skills, and act as a patient advocate. Duties also include performing necessary immobilization (includes calculating doses and administering sedation) in collaboration with the clinicians, evaluating CAT scan images for technical quality, assist in maintaining inventory of supplies and evaluating new products and equipment. May provide training for students and faculty in specialty area. Will assist with maintaining a clean and orderly work environment and will teach and model quality veterinary nursing care.
Equine Technician – WSU is a 24-hour service facility that is available 365 days a year for diagnosis and interventions as needed in the horse population. This technician will be part of the team which encompasses equine orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, and theriogenology. The position requires the skills, abilities, mindfulness, and dedication of a horse-oriented individual. This technician must demonstrate knowledge of equine handling, behavior and restraint for adult and juvenile equine patients and the technical skills required as a licensed veterinary technician. Emphasis will be on equine handling skills and awareness to provide a safe working environment for the clinicians, colleagues, and students in the unit. This technician will assist with teaching 4th year veterinary professional degree students and will assist with all aspects of routine and specialty patient care.
SA ICU and Emergency Service Technician – The WSU Critical Care is a 24/7 fully staffed fast growing service. Licensed technicians are always on duty helping to oversee and assist with patient stabilization and treatments. This team of outstanding professionals provide compassionate care at the highest level using the latest tools, medicines, and techniques. The staff handles the critically ill and emergent patients with round the clock observation and therapy. Depending upon skill/position level, technician duties include peripheral and central intravenous line placement, canine and feline urinary catheter placement, pain assessment, administering constant rate infusions, monitoring vitals including direct and indirect blood pressure, ECG monitoring, and patient advocacy. Duties will also include performing and/or assisting with thoracocentesis, abdominocentesis, administering blood transfusions, and performing CPR. This position is involved with helping to develop the emergency and critical care knowledge of the fourth- year veterinary students. Strong communication and teaching skills and aptitude are required.
Oncology Technician – The Oncology services is seeking a good team player with exceptional patient care skills. As part of the oncology team, you will work closely with our clients and their pets and assist the veterinarians in performing radiation and chemotherapy treatments as well as follow up care. As an added plus, you will be trained to help run the Linear Accelerator for the radiation treatments, a unique opportunity for any veterinary technician. To be successful in this position you need to have a strong work ethic and good communication skills and be an effective patient advocate. Organizational skills and solid all-around technical skills are important, especially atraumatic intubation and intravenous catheter placement. Come help us provide compassion and individualized care to our oncology patients and their family.
Anesthesia Technician – position will work under the guidance of the hospital’s anesthesiologists to coordinate patient anesthesia schedules, check pre-op work ups, administer pre-op and induction medications, intubate and maintain an appropriate level of sedation or anesthesia. This position will also be involved with venous and arterial catheterization, and patient instrumentation as appropriate for the procedure. Depending on skill/position level, you will be expected to have the ability to manage up to an ASA 2/3/4/5 level cases with minimal support. Managing these cases means you will be working in conjunction with clinicians and students to handle technical problems related to the delivery of anesthesia to patients which may include but is not limited to addressing inappropriate anesthetic depths, changes to cardiovascular status, recognizing cardiac arrhythmias, and trouble-shooting monitor or equipment issues. There will also be clinical teaching and mentoring to fourth-year veterinary students as it relates to specific case management. This position will work with both large and small animal patients and therefore must have experience with both. You will oversee and be expected to complete medical records to maintain patient data essential for accurate anesthesia records as well as insure proper charge capture. This position will also be trained to offer various analgesic options for patient care. There may be occasional on-call responsibilities.
The Small Animal Surgery Technician-This position provides clinical support to the VTH Surgical department by prepping, circulating and assisting in all aspects of surgical care and treatment of patients presented to the service. This position may help with pre-op meds, anesthetic injections in collaboration with the anesthesia team, obtaining pre-op lab samples and collecting diagnostic samples. Duties will include setting up, maintaining and tearing down operating rooms. Other responsibilities include preparing animals for surgery, radiology, and the application of splints and casts, and other various treatments related to the surgical patient. You will also assist with the surgical wards patients and may have client interaction while dealing with appointments. Depending on the skill/position level, you may provide clinical instruction in general and specialty surgical set up and patient care such as proper gowning and gloving, operating room protocols and sterile technique. Understanding of patient anatomy so as to identify necessary landmarks when prepping patients is also necessary. Excellent communication skills, including proper medical terminology, and good team interaction is a must.
