The Mi’kmaq People have cared for the land for thousands of years and continue to do so. With this acknowledgment, we remember the history, and honour the presence and resilience of Indigenous people here today.
Located in beautiful Charlottetown, the University of Prince Edward Island enjoys a prominent position as the Province’s only university and as a centre for intellectual, social, cultural, and economic activity. Established in 1969, UPEI’s ten Faculties and two Schools, which includes the Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research, and Applied Studies, offer a wide range of programs and degrees to more than 5,465 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students from around the world. UPEI employs approximately 1000 staff and faculty members along with 500 casual and student employees. The University has recently established a Faculty of Medicine to house a regional campus of Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine which will accept its first students in the fall of 2025. With this Faculty’s establishment, UPEI joins a small and exclusive cohort of only four other universities in Canada who offer both a veterinary school and medical school. With an operating budget of over $183m, UPEI is home to six Canada Research Chairs and nine 3M National Teaching Fellows. UPEI is one of Atlantic Canada’s finest universities, and a significant economic and cultural contributor to the region. With an ever-increasing number of graduate students and enrolment diversity, UPEI is a dynamic, growing University. The UPEI community is energized by this growth – both in people and programs – and is excited about the future.
The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) seeks a Vice-President, Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (VPIT/CIO).
Reporting to the President, and as a key member of the University’s Senior Executive Team of four Vice-Presidents, the VPIT/CIO provides overall leadership and direction to shaping and implementing UPEI’s digital transformation strategy, partnering with campus stakeholders to develop and implement frameworks for the effective management of technology such as IT governance and enterprise architecture, overseeing vendor management, driving systems renewal, and integrating the digital learning environment effectively all in pursuit of enhancing the student experience and research enterprise. The VPIT/CIO will be a champion for the academic community, ensuring that technology solutions are aligned with the academic mission of UPEI. Leading nine direct reports, the incoming Vice-President and Chief Information Officer will collaborate and engage with all members of the University community, including academic leaders, to guide digital transformation and technological capabilities of UPEI, and will actively represent UPEI across national CIO and IT associations.
Ideally, candidates will bring a Master’s degree in IT or a relevant field, and experience as a strategic information technology leader, accountable for leading technological innovation and transformational IT strategies, with a demonstrated track record of effective relationship-building, preferably with a robust understanding of emerging technology in a higher education setting. They will have successfully led large-scale digital transformation projects and possess deep knowledge of IT infrastructure, enterprise systems, vendor management, data governance, and cybersecurity. The new VPIT/CIO will excel in communication, building strong campus-wide relationships, and demonstrate a commitment to integrity, collaboration, service, strategic thinking, and leveraging technology to support UPEI’s academic mission and research enterprise across its unique programs.
Consideration of applications will begin in October 2024 with the new CIO to take office in April 2025. For more information, to apply, or to submit a nomination, please contact Andrea Patrick or Nick Ketley at upeicio@odgersberndtson.com or via our website https://careers.odgersberndtson.com/en-ca/job/29868/.
