ROLE SUMMARY
At Alliance, we believe that all of our scholars can achieve at high levels. That’s why we’ve raised our aspirations – to be in the top quartile of all schools in California and ensure our scholars enroll in and graduate from college. The Vice President, Teaching & Learning is charged with ensuring that all scholars have access to rigorous, culturally responsive instruction that prepares them for success in college. The VP, Teaching & Learning reports directly to the Chief Instructional Officer and manages the Content Teams (e.g., English Language Arts, Math, Science, Visual and Performing Arts, and History).
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide departmental leadership, organizational academic strategy and direction, and systems-level thinking.
- Play a key role in driving the organization’s multi-year roadmap to address trauma and unfinished teaching that has occurred as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic;
- Collaboratively set and monitor annual instructional priorities and strategies to guide the team’s strategic plan; rally a diverse group of staff around common goals;
- Provide input and direction in the design and refinement of Alliance’s academic model to ensure a high-quality, culturally responsive instructional program in grades 6-12, aligned to Alliance’s college success mission and the network’s commitment towards anti-racism;
- In partnership with other senior leaders such as the Vice President, Diverse Learners, and the Instructional Superintendents Team, accelerate the performance of all scholars across the network, especially our Black / African American scholars, scholars with disabilities, and those learning English.
- Monitor state and local policies that impact instructional requirements in K-12 Education and design strategies for implementation and adoption.
Collaboratively lead the network’s instructional supports, tools, and professional development.
- In partnership with Home Office Vice Presidents and Instructional Superintendents, lead the network’s school support implementation teams to provide high-quality and differentiated instructional support to all schools to increase learning outcomes for all scholars;
- Through regular visits to school sites, provide coaching and support to direct reports that increase their efficacy in improving instruction;
- Design and refine tools, guidance, and training for school leadership teams to implement a high-quality instructional cycle (observation and feedback, scholarly work and data analysis, and intellectual preparation) that results in improved classroom practice;
- Support the design and facilitation of robust professional development for school leaders, school leadership teams, and teachers.
- Communicate with Home Office Teams and school sites through regular and strategic forms to gather insight and context on how to iterate on strategies and support change management.
Lead a large, complex department with attention to team culture and satisfaction.
- Serve as a member of Home Office Leadership Team, playing an active and influential role in discussions and decisions about Alliance’s school-facing priorities and plans;
- Lead and develop directors and their larger team through modeling, doing, and coaching.
- Engage a diverse, and effective team through effective recruiting, training, coaching, motivating, team building, and succession planning;
- Model and facilitate inclusive team culture practices, such as valuing diverse perspectives and working across lines of differences;
- Manage the professional growth of direct reports to build and cultivate strong leadership skills.

- Ability to set a clear, common vision and bar for rigorous, culturally responsive teaching in grades 6-12;
- A record of achievement leading research-based academic strategy, implementation, and approaches that radically improve scholar performance; including the ability to differentiate strategy and approaches between middle and high schools to best address the developmental needs of scholars;
- Deep experience analyzing and using data (at the network, school, subgroup level) to monitor and drive academic growth;
- Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching, the Common Core State Standards and the instructional shifts, the Next Generation Science Standards, and the California Assessment of Scholar Progress and Performance (Smarter Balanced) as well as current effective academic practices that are being implemented at other districts/networks;
- Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of established, entrepreneurial schools with their own unique strengths and needs. This includes building strong relationships with teachers, school leaders, Instructional Superintendents, and other home office and school-based staff;
- Exceptional problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to effectively guide adult learners, lead change management efforts, and develop scalable systems;
- Experience managing people and cross-functional teams, programs, projects, and initiatives; motivating a wide variety of stakeholders to embrace and successfully reach ambitious goals;
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
- Strong organization, time management, and follow-through skills; high sense of accountability to the work; and,
- Willingness to go above and beyond to lead and contribute to the success of a dynamic team committed to a new future for urban education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required;
- Five (5) years of full-time, professional experience in a public education system or organization serving high-need populations with at least five (5) years in a supervisory and leadership role;
- Previous experience as a successful school leader serving high-need populations (preferred).
WORK LOCATION
This position is a hybrid role that will include working from home, our network office, and travel to school sites. The successful candidate will be given a $400 work-from-home set-up allowance and receive a monthly stipend of $100.
BENEFITS
In alignment with our commitment to equity for our scholars, Alliance is committed to equity and transparency for our team and offers competitive salaries commensurate with experience as well as generous retirement and health benefits. This position is exempt.
- Relocation: Individuals residing outside of the Greater Los Angeles area are eligible for a relocation bonus of $5,000 for individuals and $7,500 for new staff with families/partners.

- Retirement: Alliance Home Office employees are eligible for a retirement allowance equal to 7.5% of their regular yearly earnings. Please click HERE for more information on retirement.
- Paid Leave: Regular full-time 12-month employees receive 8.5 weeks of vacation and paid time off. Additionally, full-time employees accrue 3 weeks of flexible paid time off per year and receive 27 other paid holidays as part of our network calendar.
- Professional Development: At Alliance, we believe in supporting staff growth and development. Home Office staff are allocated $500 per year for professional development expenses.
COMPENSATION
$130,000.00 – $173,500.00
