The UK Mission to the United Nations & WTO represents the interests and policies of the UK at international organisations in Geneva and is now recruiting for an Assistant to the UK Ambassador for Human Rights and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

 

As an Assistant, the jobholder will be responsible for ensuring the Ambassador is supported to undertake her representational and policy work both in Geneva and also on her regional visits; and that she has practical support for the significant amount of social media and public communications that her job involves.

Roles and responsibilities:

 

  • Managing the Ambassador’s schedule and providing logistical support. Organising meetings, travel and events.

  • Leading on the Ambassador’s overseas visit programmes. Collaborating with Desks and Posts across the FCDO network to establish programmes and a communication strategy aligned with UK human rights priorities.

  • Represent the office of the Ambassador and provide an effective channel of communication by engaging with senior stakeholders, Ministerial offices, UN agencies, and government officials to convey clear messages to/and on behalf of the Ambassador.

  • Commission and coordinate briefings in preparation for meetings with international stakeholders including at the Human Rights Council and as part of the Ambassador’s wider roving role.

  • Play a lead role in managing the Ambassador’s social media content, and occasionally providing support to the communications team when required.

  • Information management including record keeping, file management, maintaining contact databases and updating planning documents;  

  • Part of a wider team providing cover for senior members of the UK Mission including the Permanent Representative to the UN and WTO.

  • Coordination of joint statements and meetings with the network of European Human Rights Ambassadors.

  • Line Management of an intern providing administrative and policy support to the Ambassador.

  • Management and oversight of the Ambassador’s budget.

  • Supporting the Human Rights team on general policy tasks including covering meetings at the Human Rights Council and drafting official correspondence. 

  • Fluency in written and spoken English – C2 level (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)

  • Strong organisational and time management skills with excellent attention to detail;

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;

  • A team player, willing to help out their colleagues and able to work with contacts and colleagues of all levels;

  • Flexible, resilient under pressure, with a proven track record of delivering results to a high standard, within tight deadlines;

  • Familiarity with working on social media platforms and experience in producing creative content.

  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Office Word, Outlook).

  • Strong interest in working the field of human rights.

  • Experience working in or with governments.

  • Experience working in a multilateral environment.

This is a full-time permanent contract.

Applicants that have the right to live and work in Geneva and don’t require a visa sponsorship are: Nationals from United Kingdom, European Union and EFTA, along with Nationals of: Brunei Darussalam, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Principality of Andorra, Principality of Monaco, San Marino, Singapore and Vatican – these applicants are eligible to live and work in Switzerland as long as holding a full passport valid for at least 12 months.

All other applicants need to have permission to live and work in Switzerland.
