View Vacancy – BD – Trade and Investment Manager, EO

Department for Business and Trade roles (DBT)

Department for Business and Trade (DBT)

Main Purpose of Job:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the British High Commission’s Economic and Trade Team. Economic growth is at the heart of the UK Government’s economic strategy and international trade partnerships are key to success. To advance the UK’s international trade partnership agenda, the UK’s Department for Business & Trade (DBT) supports UK businesses to invest, grow and export. As a Trade and Investment Manager, you will have the opportunity to take forward our work to develop more trade and investment partnerships for the UK in Brunei, stimulating trade and investment flows between innovative British and Bruneian partners (see www.gov.uk/DBT).

You will be a key member of our diverse and inclusive British High Commission team, which works to maintain our strong bilateral relationship with Brunei and deliver our wider goals as an ASEAN Dialogue Partner and a new member of the CPTPP.  As part of the High Commission’s Chancery Team, you will lead on shaping and delivering trade elements of our Country Business Plan, and develop and deliver projects and events with initiative and drive. This year marks a significant year for the UK as it joins the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.  You will work hand in hand with the DBT team regionally and in London identify trade and investment opportunities, providing relevant details on Brunei’s business ecosystem.

Reporting to the Head of Economics, you will be part of the Economics and Trade Team, with support from the Director for Trade and Investment based in Malaysia.  The job will involve supporting trade promotion activities, including Trade Missions, UK Ministerial visits and VIP delegations, providing advice on trade policy in Brunei, working with a wide range of stakeholders from the public and private sector, creating strong network of contacts and maintaining a client and project database. The job will also require you to provide basic market analysis and guidance on doing business in Brunei to UK companies.

The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future. The work will be varied and sometimes fast paced. The successful candidate will be a dynamic self-starter with a high degree of initiative and the ability to juggle priorities. We are looking for someone proactive with great people skills. A background in trade or government is an advantage but more important is a proactive mindset and a passion for building partnerships. The role offers excellent scope for personal and professional development.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Establish, develop and maintain a network of key contacts across Brunei’s key sectors.
  • Help to develop and implement DBT Brunei’s trade strategy working closely with colleagues in BHC, the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Asia Pacific regional team and colleagues in DBT’s UK HQ.
  • Provide support to the resident Defence Advisor relating to trade opportunities in the defence & security sector.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of trade opportunities in Brunei, building strong and productive relationships with local stakeholders in public and private sectors.
  • Develop and manage a pipeline of business opportunities in Brunei, with an outcome-driven approach to creating the best conditions for exporter success.
  • Provide advice and support to UK companies around their business development activities in Brunei.
  • Work with UK companies to understand and feed back any potential concerns of market access barriers to trade opportunities in Brunei.
  • Work closely with DBT teams to maximise utilization of the CPTPP trade agreement when it enters-into-force.
  • Manage relationships with key industry bodies and scan trends and regulatory developments to identify and pursue commercial opportunities and to identify and tackle any barriers to trade.
  • Support/lead on delivery of sector events and VIP visits, such as Trade Missions and Ministerial / Senior Official visits, that help position UK companies to develop business in Brunei, including contributing to high-quality briefings.

The successful candidate will be joining a growing team and will be able to develop a wide range of relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills while developing export opportunities for the UK.

As DBT Brunei’s business priorities evolve, the successful candidate will potentially be involved in supporting other priority sectors/workstreams, and a flexible approach is important.

  • Strong interest in business and trade
  • Excellent oral and written English
  • Minimum of 2 years of previous work experience
  • Excellent presentation, interpersonal and networking skills
  • Strong written, analytical and research skills
  • Very good IT skills, especially MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel;
  • Self-Starter – ability to work well on own initiative
  • Ability to work under pressure at times and juggle multiple priorities effectively
  • Good organisational/project management skills
  • Understanding of the political-economic regional and global context.
