Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy Bangkok is a large diplomatic mission of around 150 staff delivering a dynamic and rapidly expanding programme of activity in support of the UK’s objectives. This includes activities linked to prosperity, trade, security, open societies, consular services and law enforcement. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the UK Government’s communications in Thailand, with responsibility for strategic communications, digital media, press engagement and campaigns.

  • To set and deliver a strategic vision for the UK’s image in Thailand that reflects UK Government policy priorities and ensures a strong and distinct UK profile.
  • Working in partnership with the Indo-Pacific Hub, and teams across the British Embassy in Bangkok, to promote and profile the UK’s strengths, deliver strategic communications campaigns, drive comms activity in support of visits and events, and support our ambitions and values.
  • To reflect the many faces of the UK to the Thai public, while ensuring smooth communication between the UK Government and British Nationals in Thailand.
  • To demonstrate high quality communication and policy judgement, the ability to identify and exploit communication opportunities, and to navigate challenging stories.
  • To oversee, delivering effectively through the team, the Embassy’s outward facing activities, including deployment of soft power, as well as our internal communications.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

As Head of Communications for our work in Thailand, you will create and deliver a Communications Strategy targeted to our audiences in order to ensure that communications are an integral part of delivering UK Government objectives in Thailand. You will need to work closely with the Indo-Pacific Hub, and collaboratively with teams from across the Embassy to understand their needs and develop effective communications interventions and campaigns.

You will need to build effective relationships with Thailand-based journalists and media outlets. You will undertake media planning and delivery for high-profile visits and events. You will provide advice on all aspects of our communications work, taking into consideration UK strategic objectives and the media and political environment in Thailand. You will drive continuous improvement in the Embassy’s social media platforms, and act as the focal point for the Embassy’s soft power effort to strengthen the UK’s profile in Thailand.  

  • Work with all sections of the Embassy and the British Council to develop a clear and deliverable Communications Strategy in line with UK Government objectives for Thailand, and lead on developing innovative campaigns in support of this
  • Ensure the Embassy’s proactive and effective engagement with Thailand-based media (Thai and international)
  • Oversee a savvy public profiling of the UK in the media (including digital media) through both proactively and reactively identifying and exploiting opportunities
  • In 2025, deliver the communications and activities of the 170th Anniversary of UK-Thai Diplomatic Relations along with other sections
  • Act as focal point and responsible owner for the Embassy’s soft power work
  • Advise on media and public engagement for visiting VIPs, the Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission
  • Oversee management of the Embassy’s digital presence (currently website, X Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn), driving continuous improvement. Advise on effective use of digital channels to communicate with British Nationals in Thailand
  • Ensure that the Embassy responds to fast-moving events with clear and considered press lines. Proactively and proportionately maintain up-to-date core scripts to ensure consistent messaging on UK Government policy in Thailand
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure core UK messages are being heard and understood
  • Advise on and implement Embassy internal communications
  • Act as the media lead in the crisis response team
  • Maintain a high level of performance and motivation within the Communications Team, by modelling strong leadership, offering a clear sense of direction, coaching, encouraging learning and development, and promoting a team spirit. Delegate to and empower team members to ensure effective delivery through others.
  • Act as a member of the Embassy’s leadership team. Offer views from country-based staff at the management level.

Others:

  • In times of peak operation demand, work flexibly within the Section and the Embassy
  • All staff will be expected to make a corporate contribution to the smooth running of the British Embassy, either through a committee membership or another voluntary role to support the vision and values of the Embassy as outlined below.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

  • Direct line management of two members of staff (Communications Manager – Media and Communications and Manager-Campaigns and Events)
  • Countersigning one Communication Officer
  • Full management of campaign fund budgets in line with any successful bids

  • Substantial experience (3 years minimum) in leading strategic communications work within an organisation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (see language requirements below)
  • Strong understanding of the media, political and economic environment in Thailand, and ability to apply this when formulating advice on our communications work.
  • Understanding of media relations, including of what Thailand-based journalists want, and how best to build relations and work with them.
  • Track record in developing effective, targeted communications strategies for the Thai media and social media landscape, including the ability to identify the right communications strategy for different target audiences.
  • Experience in creating or overseeing digital content production
  • Good judgement and sensitivity to local and global issues
  • Ability to see the bigger policy picture and understand organisational priorities, and reflect these in development of campaigns.
  • Understanding of how strategic communications helps deliver wider policy objectives
  • An engaged, inspiring leader
  • Experience in managing a team and effectively delivering through others
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Willingness to give and receive constructive feedback on behaviours and competences

Language Requirements:

English: Advanced: excellent command of spoken and written English, equivalent to IELTS 7.5 or above. Offers of employment may be made conditional on a recent IELTS test but this is not required ahead of application / interview.

Thai: Advanced: excellent command of spoken and written Thai, equivalent to C1 CEFR level or above. (Political Thai not required).

  • Familiarity with UK politics and society
  • Strong project management skills, with a focus on outcomes and results
  • Experience in event management
  • Experience in writing speeches and op-eds
  • Experience of government or not for profit communications
  • Experience in journalism, writing or translation

Learning and development opportunities:

The British Embassy Bangkok encourages all staff to develop their capabilities, through both formal training (courses) and informal (job-shadowing, coaching, on-the-job training etc). The majority of our formal L&D opportunities are drawn from FCO resources. All staff are encouraged to share their skills and experience with colleagues, through informal training (‘lunch & learn’) or coaching/mentoring. All staff are eligible for 5 L&D days a year. As stated above, you will be required to complete the trade modules of the Diplomatic Academy upon arrival into the position.

Working patterns:

This is a permanent, full time role – 36 hours/week, Monday to Friday. We are currently piloting hybrid working (some time working in the office, some time working from home) as we transition back to normal working practices, while ensuring the health and safety of our staff. You will be expected to spend some time out of the office, engaging with partners and stakeholders; some time in the office; and will be able to have the flexibility to work from home. If the context of the pandemic changes, the proportion of time spent at home / in office / in external engagements may change.

The Mission has a smarter working policy and is committed to offering flexible working patterns balanced with the operational requirements of the role. In crisis/emergency situations you may need to work as required to support the Mission response, sometimes on a shift pattern working which may result in unsociable hours and/or weekend working.

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment and security checks. Staff who are locally recruited by the British Embassy are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. You must have or be able to obtain correct permit to work or work authorisation in Thailand in order to apply. Any costs related to obtaining or renewing permits and visas are the responsibility of the successful applicant.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Embassy salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.

Please note that it is likely that any non-Thai national who is successful in securing a role within the Embassy will need to leave the country and re-enter with a specific type of visa if currently living in Thailand or will need to apply for a visa before travelling here if currently based outside of Thailand. Whilst the Embassy can support you with this process, the costs involved will need to be met by the candidate.
