Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy Santiago is pleased to offer three five and a half month internships, running from October 2024 to end of March 2025. The internships’ three successful candidates will have the opportunity to work across the embassy’s Political and Communications; Prosperity; and Corporate Services teams, delivering projects for each over the course of the internship. 

Through the opportunity of working in different sections across the embassy, the jobholder will gain experience of a broad range of embassy functions. For the Political and Communications team, the interns will support the team leading the UK’s international engagement and foreign policy dialogue with Chile, including our bilateral engagement with Chile’s government, National Congress, presidential and congressional advisers, and representatives from international organisations, the diplomatic corps, civil society and think tanks. For Prosperity, the interns will support the team that leads the embassy’s work on economic issues, climate action and biodiversity, science and innovation, and global health. For the embassy’s Corporate Services team, the interns will support the team providing the platform for all the UK Government’s business in Chile, contributing to the smooth running of the embassy’s operations, logistics and administrative processes. 

This is an excellent opportunity to learn about foreign policy and international relations, international trade policy, and how the UK and Chile work together to solve global problems. Our interns play an important role in supporting our work and have an opportunity to make a real impact through the projects they are work on.   

Roles and responsibilities: 

  • Support implementation of the British Embassy’s political and diplomatic engagement, including: maintaining and updating our political stakeholders database; arranging, attending and taking minutes in external meetings; attending and contributing to embassy working groups; diary management; update and maintain section resources and briefings.
  • Assist with research: researching information and contacts (UK and Chilean) in priority areas, including political and legislative developments.
  • Support  project and event management logistics, helping deliver exciting and impactful events (King’s Birthday Party, programmes for visiting UK officials and ministers, and Political Team travel within Chile and Latin America) in pursuit of section, embassy and UK strategic priorities, including contact with suppliers and venues, and updating and maintaining briefing materials and guest lists.
  • Support the Communications Team work, including contributing to the production of social media content and delivery of the embassy’s communications strategy.
  • Assist with information management and record keeping on procurement, finance and Human Resources.
  • Assist in the updating of current databases and actively contribute to the strengthening of relationships with stakeholders and suppliers. Researching for new suppliers and products to improve operations.

  • Essential on arrival: The intern must be enrolled in a Chilean university/college programme that will allow them to participate in an internship / “práctica profesional”.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to deal with multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Problem-solving, attention to detail and efficient administrative skills.

Language requirements: 

Language: English and Spanish

Level of language required:  Fluent Spanish. Ideally business level in both written and spoken English.  

Must have the legal status to live and work in Chile.

Appointable candidates will be required to provide proof of enrolment at their current university. 

We are looking for proactive individuals who have political knowledge and/or experience, understand Chile’s political environment and context, and have strong organisational, collaboration, problem-solving, communication and administrative skills to manage simultaneous ongoing tasks.

The interns will have the opportunity to take part in the embassy’s learning and development activities and will agree a clear L&D plan for their internship.

The FCDO operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.

The intern will work part-time during the internship and be required to work 24 hours a week with flexible working available to fulfil that commitment. The Embassy working hours are 09:00-1730 Mon-Thurs and 0900-1300 on Friday.

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’.  If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate
