Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (Consular Roles)
Consular
Main purpose of job:
Based in Kingston, Jamaica, the successful applicant will provide professional and empathetic front-line consular assistance to British Nationals in Jamaica and the Bahamas, working alongside the Consular Team.
The role will involve managing a busy and complex casework portfolio, assisting customers who have experienced significant trauma and distress. As such, a high level of personal resilience is required, along with a strong customer focus and the ability to manage expectations. Regular interaction will be required with members of the public, local, regional and UK authorities as well as other Diplomatic missions in Jamaica and colleagues across the consular network to fulfil the delivery of the FCDO’s Consular Strategy.
There will be opportunities for travel in-country, and within the Americas Consular Network to provide regional resilience, and to attend training or conferences, sometimes at short notice or outside of normal working hours. The Consular Officer reports to the Vice-Consul.

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):
The selected candidate will be required to complete the Fundamentals in Action training virtually upon arrival and a 5-day Developing Consular Expertise training course in London within 6 – 8 months in the role. Completion of additional mandatory FCDO training such as Data Protection Regulation, Safeguarding and Health & Safety will also be required.
The FCDO values on-the-job learning. This role provides the opportunity to acquire knowledge of consular policy and practice and fine-tune other widely applicable skills such as networking, presentation skills and effective prioritisation.
The Americas Consular Network places great emphasis on promoting learning and development. Additional L&D opportunities are presented for bidding on a regular basis through both the Post and Consular L&D programmes.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Working patterns:
Requires standard working pattern of 39 hours per week. Core office hours are 8am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 8.00am to 1.00pm on Fridays.
Due to the front-line nature of this role, full (5 days a week) in office working is required during the first six months of employment. Thereafter, the successful applicant may work from home up to two days per week, depending on priorities and ensuring continuity for British nationals requiring in-person assistance.
The British Embassy Network offers a strong benefits package. This package includes generous vacation and leave time, flexible working patterns, and enriching learning and development opportunities.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
You will sometimes be expected to deal with people going through very difficult/stressful, even traumatic, experiences. We recognise this may affect our staff and we provide wellbeing support to help manage their own experience of these challenging situations.
The FCDO operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.
