The British Embassy in Paris is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The British Defence Staff (BDS) – France plays a key role in developing, maintaining and promoting the UK-French defence and security relationship.  Its mission is to build enduring strategic relationships with a wide range of French partners in order to further the objectives outlined in the UK Defence Strategy for France.

BDS France is looking for a Driver to lead on planning and delivery of transport for BDS events across France. The BDS team consists of 18 people. You will be working in a busy environment alongside the attachés, finance, HR and Executive Assistant staff.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Lead on weekly transport planning and coordination of daily transports requests.
  • Ensure that BDS Officers, Support Staff and V.I.P. Delegations are safely driven to/from events, meetings and engagements on time, across France.
  • Work closely with your driver colleague, the Executive Assistants/teams to plan and coordinate transport requirements.
  • Ensure day-to-day vehicle control and maintenance checks of vehicles and arranging for vehicle repair when necessary. Maintain proper and clean appearance of vehicles inside and outside.
  • Ensuring that vehicles are always ready for use. Register vehicle mileage according to a standard process.
  • Lead on delivery of transport logistics for BDS Team and V.I.P Delegations.
  • Build network of key stakeholders at the embassy and elsewhere in order to help the team effectively deliver high profile visits/events.
  • Support BDS Team on occasions when transport is needed to support complex, large, or high-profile events.
  • Staff and process transport requests with flexibility and transparency.
  • Be prepared to check-in at BDS premises for transport programme coordination on daily basis.
  • Be prepared to work overtime.
  • Be prepared to work during weekends.
  • Lead on providing comparative competitive estimates on transport services and vehicle repair with accredited garages when needed.
  • A working level of both French and English is desirable.

This role would also include elements of office and administration support to BDS team. The exact tasks will depend on team priorities but are likely to include elements of:

  • Being prepared to help tackle ad-hoc tasks that arise in the office, providing help to the Executive Assistants as appropriate and as approved by the call.

The successful candidate will be joining welcoming and supportive teams, working in the interesting worlds of the bilateral relations at the British Embassy to France.

Essential on arrival:      

  • At least three years of experience working as a professional driver;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Ability to interact with senior colleagues;
  • A working level of both French and English, at least at a B2 level;
  • Absolute discretion and the ability to keep information seen or heard in confidence.

Desirable:      

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint etc;
  • Experience of working for government/a diplomatic mission/international organisation and knowledge of protocol and handling of ministers etc;
  • Good knowledge of Paris/France and its road system.

This is a full time, permanent contract. Incumbent will work on shift patterns (including weekends, nights and bank holidays) and there is the possibility of overtime.

The position is based on a 35/H week, due to the nature of the work there is the requirement to occasionally work some irregular hours, particularly starting early or finishing late, during the working week. There may also be requirements to work on some weekends. Overtime will be paid as and when required.

All appointments are subject to professional background check satisfactory security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to provide a copy of his/her passport or national identity card for all nationalities held, an up-to-date criminal record (casier judiciaire) for recent countries of residence (which can be obtained online at https://www.cjn.justice.gouv.fr/cjn/b3/eje20), two written proofs of address (utility invoices and/or bank statements) and two references.

Working Pattern: The position is based on a 35- hour working week. There may also be requirements to work on weekends. The successful candidate will be entitled to overtime payments for working additional hours/ overtime payment as and when required.
