Main purpose of job:
- The British Embassy Monrovia has a team of two drivers. The jobholder will join as a member of that team, reporting to a Corporate Services Assistant. The driver will carry out daily driving duties and support the efficient functioning of the Embassy, working as a key part of the Embassy team.
- The successful applicant will be responsible for providing a safe, effective service to Embassy staff and official visitors when required. This includes providing professional and safe driving services, efficient messenger and administrative support, and any other work required by the Embassy.
- We are looking for a team player, with a positive attitude and a strong commitment to integrity and transparency.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Driving Embassy staff to meetings, appointments and functions outside the Embassy, checking the location of meetings and demonstrating an excellent knowledge of Monrovia and the surrounding area.
- Providing transport and logistical support for Embassy visitors.
- Responsibility for all vehicle care; undertaking daily vehicle checking of tyres, hydraulic (brake) fluid, engine oil, radiator and battery levels and verifying the rear and front lights including indicator and brake lights are in good working order.
- Ensuring the Embassy vehicles are always clean, refueled, and in good running condition and that regular maintenance schedules are followed.
- Overseeing routine and urgent maintenance of vehicles. Working with local garages to ensure proactive maintenance is completed in a timely and proper manner to ensure minimum down time of the vehicle.
- Maintaining a daily log of all journeys and ensuring that passengers complete the Vehicle Journey Log.
- Reporting any vehicle accidents and/or malfunctions to the Line Manager.
- Distributing letters/invitations and carrying out all other errands or work as required by the Embassy.

Language requirements:
- English (Fluent spoken and good written) – essential
- Local language – desirable.
- A clean current ‘category C’ driving license (which permits the holder to drive heavy vehicles).
- At least three years recent experience of professional driving in Liberia.
- Excellent driving skills with attention to safety.
- Proven ability to concentrate and drive safely in heavy and hazardous driving conditions.
- Knowledge of local driving laws and traffic patterns.
- Good IT and computer skills, including email and managing an online calendar.
- A good working knowledge of Monrovia and its principal locations.
- Good standards of reading and writing in English. Fluency in spoken English.
- Good knowledge of basic car maintenance and mechanical principles.
- High level of personal integrity, honesty and discretion.
- Readiness to work in a team.
- Courtesy and consideration in dealing with staff and other customers.

Working patterns:
- Standard office working hours are from 8:00am to 16:15pm, Monday to Thursday and 8:00am to 13:15pm on Fridays but drivers are regularly required to work outside of these hours in order to accommodate duties to cover evening functions, airport trips and other out-of-hours activity.
- Annual leave is based on terms of service with 14 public holidays annually. Overtime is payable to drivers. Flexibility in scheduling is critical to this role.
