Main purpose of job:

The Estates Section is seeking a highly skilled and experienced electrician to undertake a wide range of electrical maintenance, repair and testing tasks. The role encompasses responsibilities for electrical systems across the British High Commission compound and leased properties in the surrounding areas.

The incumbent will be line managed by the Electrical Supervisor and will play an integral role as part of the Country Based Staff (CBS) team at the diplomatic mission, ensuring reliable operation and upkeep of all electrical facilities.

The position may occasionally require work after office hours or on weekends, as deemed necessary by the Electrical Manager/Supervisor.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

The incumbent will be expected to perform duties under the following main categories:

  • Day to Day Maintenance Work: Attend to daily maintenance requests for repair and servicing of electrical appliances, including switches, accessories, distribution boards, fans, light fittings, water heaters, washing machines, tumble dryers, fire detectors, emergency lights, and other related equipment, all in accordance with health and safety standards.(40%)
  • Periodic Maintenance of Equipment: Conduct scheduled inspections and routine maintenance of equipment, including diesel generator sets, servo-voltage stabilisers, lifts, lightning protection systems, UPS systems, Solar PV system. Maintain logbooks and accurate records of all periodic maintenance performed on electrical equipment. (5%)
  • Refurbishment of Vacant Properties: Perform electrical refurbishment of residential properties, including replacing switches, sockets and accessories, as well as servicing of washing machines, geysers, tumble dryers, electric hobs, ovens, extractor hoods and fire alarms. Carry out remedial electrical works as suggested in the Electrical Inspection Compliance Report (EICR), including modifying wiring circuits, distribution boards and accessories. (10%)
  • Testing and Compliance: Conduct Portable Appliance Testing of electrical appliances and maintain logbooks accordingly. Assist the Electrical Supervisor with electrical testing of equipment and wiring, including insulation testing, loop testing, continuity testing, visual inspections and Residual Current Device testing. Prepare comprehensive test reports based on these assessments. Oversee contractors working on ongoing projects and organised events, ensuring quality of workmanship, compliance with health and safety standards, proper site management,  appropriate use of issued material and raising material demand, as required. (5%)
  • Projects: Perform delegated tasks for new and contingency projects, including the installation of light and fan fittings, new wiring, fire alarms, energy meters, power connections for commercial kitchen appliances.(15%)
  • Services for Event Management: Provide electrical services for various events organised within the British High Commission compound and at the High Commissioner’s Residence. This includes providing temporary power connections, preparing diesel generator sets, setting up fairy lights and configuring microphone and PA systems, among other requirements. (15%)
  • Documentation and Reporting: Ensure accurate documentation of all electrical maintenance, testing, refurbishment and project work. Maintain detailed records, prepare reports and provide updates on the status of ongoing tasks and completed work. (5%)
  • Miscellaneous Responsibilities: The incumbent should be willing to attend calls or work occasionally during extended business hours, on weekends and on holidays or any other work as deemed to be essential by the Supervisor/ Manager. (5%)

  • Language: English, Hindi
  • Level of language required: Proficient

Working Patterns:

This is a full-time position with a 40-hour work week. Flexible or remote working is not applicable. The incumbent should be willing to work occasionally during extended business hours, on weekends and on holidays as required and deemed essential by the Supervisor/ Manager.

Essential on arrival:

  • Candidates should either possess a Senior Secondary (10+2) School Certificate along with a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Proficiency in house wiring skills, with strong fault-finding skills related to electrical equipment.
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings and single-line diagrams.     
  • Basic proficiency in English, with the ability to listen to and understand English spoken by native speakers.
  • Capability to complete logbooks and generate reports legibly in English.
  • A solid understanding of the operation of earthing systems, diesel generators, transformers, LT switchgear, supply changeover panels and earth leakage protection devices.
  • Physical ability to perform outdoor strenuous activities, including climbing ladders, accessing building attics, lifting of weight up to 20kg unassisted.
  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring high quality work, particularly in installations, maintenance and testing.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues efficiently, particularly in time-sensitive or complex situations.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate with other departments or contractors for project execution.
  • Adaptability to handle multiple tasks and changing work requirements, including emergency and unplanned projects.

Desirable:   

  • Possessing an Electrical License provided by a Government Body or an ITI qualification in the electrical field along with a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Certification in Health and Safety related to electrical works.
  • Experience of working in a diplomatic mission or similar international organisation.
  • Proficiency in MS Word and MS Excel.

For other than BHC Candidates, salary will be all-inclusive of INR 27,793 per month plus 12% Provident Fund and 6% Superannuation.

Additionally, the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family which includes self, spouse/partner and children up to an age of 23 years and irrespective of age, only if with, physical or mental disability.

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided. FCDO does not pay for any travelling, accommodation & relocation expenses incurred and/or accept any financial risk, including cancellation or reschedule costs

Please note – BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g., some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Please note – “Provident Fund Transfer in and out from EPFO is not possible as BHC PF is managed by a private PF trust governed by Indian Income Tax Act, 1961. The staff still has the option to transfer out and in from a privately held PF trust which are not governed by EPFO. Any tax deduction on EPF will be in compliance with local income-tax law and must be complied with in full.”
