Main purpose of job:

To support the Defence Adviser, by organising and facilitating the deployment of personnel involved in Defence Engagement activities; ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the Defence Section Office and all military Visit Programmes.

We reserve the right to review, revise or amend the roles and responsibilities from time to time reflecting the changing needs of business.

Roles and responsibilities/what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

The main duties will include:

  • The production of routine Defence Section correspondence.
  • Managing Defence Adviser and Defence Section electronic diary.
  • Compiling visit programmes.
  • Discrete information handling and data base management, as directed by the Defence Adviser.
  • Collating and analysing data, compiling briefs and reports as directed by the Defence Adviser.
  • Assist with the flight bookings and associated travel and accommodation arrangements for Bangladesh military personnel attending courses in the UK and elsewhere as part of the Defence Activity.
  • The provision of social secretarial duties, writing of invitation cards and compilation of guest lists and collation of replies.
  • Maintaining an electronic and paper filing system; archives; and scanning appropriate Defence documentation.
  • In the absence of the Assistant Defence Adviser (ADA), running the DIPCLEAR programme for all RAF flights entering/departing Bangladesh.
  • The co-ordination of all travel and meetings for the Defence Adviser and visitors from MOD, including transport bookings, in the absence of the ADA.
  • Providing cover for the ADA during leave periods, including compiling monthly financial returns.
  • Any other appropriate duties as detailed by the Defence Adviser or ADA.
  • Support Defence Section activities outside of normal working hours as and when required (infrequent).
  • Support UK Defence sales and Bangladesh military tendering opportunities, working with Department of Business & Trade.

What we do:

Defence Enragement:  Engaging with the Bangladesh military, maintaining and developing good diplomatic relationships. Assisting in the training, education and procurement of the Bangladesh military.

Language requirements:

Language: English

Level of language required:  Proficient    

Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):

Working across a range of Government Departments the High Commission / 1 HMG. No specialist training required.

Working patterns:

36 hours per week (Sunday to Thursday)

Applicants must already hold a minimum of the UK’s SC level of clearance or be able to achieve it.

Due to the security clearance requirement mentioned above, only Five Eye nationals are eligible to apply

Essential on arrival:

  • Has, previous knowledge or experience of working within a military environment.
  • Has an excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Has good IT skills and is competent in working with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Uses initiative.
  • Can plan and prioritize effectively.
  • Organises own work and files methodically.
  • Is able to work well as part of a small team.
  • Has protocol awareness.
  • Has understanding of analysis of information from multiple sources to produce recommendations.
  • Is prepared to do other work in support of the British High Commission Dhaka mission.
  • Meets the mandatory ‘Five Eyes’ security clearance checks to operate in a confidential area.
