Main purpose of job:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management and use of social media channels and evaluation of our engagement. He/She will also ensure our messages remain coherent, understandable and interesting to targeted audiences in Fiji and the region.

  1. Bring a creative, fresh approach to the High Commission’s communications work.
  2. Use initiative to communicate complex messages in clear language at pace.
  3. Support public diplomacy campaigns covering the full range of UK government activities.
  4. Maintain strong relations across the UK team, understanding colleagues’ work and how your role supports that, and feeding back on public perceptions of the UK through media monitoring and reporting.
  5. Be at the heart of all digital and communications content creation from start to finish.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Identify media opportunities and maximise the High Commission’s public diplomacy output across traditional (press, TV, radio) and digital media.
  • Develop and implement the High Commission’s communications strategy.
  • Monitor Fijian and regional media activity and report areas of UK interest to senior colleagues. Deliver regular media briefings and updates to political team and London. Coordinate responses to public inquiries via social media.
  • Contribute expert communications and media advice to the development of concepts and implementation of projects led by High Commission colleagues.
  • Build and maintain the High Commission’s network of communications and media contacts in Fiji;
  • Actively manage the High Commission’s social media and online channels (Facebook, X, Instagram, gov.uk, etc.) ensuring effective coverage for events and priority issues. Monitor social media channels and report impact data. Coordinate and produce high quality digital content, including video using photo and video editing tools.
  • Contribute to public diplomacy projects under the coordination of senior colleagues for all areas of interest for the High Commission (including political, climate, programme and defence engagements, etc).
  • Deliver bespoke digital campaigns and oversee comms planning and delivery for High Commission events.
  • Undertake administrative tasks including corporate payments for branded and other materials. Ensure that production of branding products (business cards, printed posters and banners including images etc.) is coordinated and design advice is consistent.
  • Support the High Commissioner and Deputy on internal communications and ensure brand consistency in all communications work.
  • Offer cover and support to High Commissioner’s Executive Assistant.
  • Some local travel and/or regional travel may be required.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

 No staff management. There will be funding available for branded items and there may be additional funding available for travel and events.

  • Experience in communications work using a variety of new and traditional media platforms
  • Strong interest in strategic communications
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with strong customer focus
  • Good judgment and strategic awareness, to understand how the UK can best promote its messages.
  • Personal drive and the ability to be a self-starter and team player; focus on delivery and ability to reprioritise and deal with a changing environment.
  • Fluent English language skills, both written and spoken
  • Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media management (Facebook, X, Instagram, etc), and photo/video editing tools.

  • Experience of working in an international and/or multi-cultural organisation.
  • Technical comms skills including; digital design, video editing and AI.

Working patterns:

The jobholder will be expected to work full-time in the British High Commission. Due to challenges of technology and utilities, remote working is not practical. Some pre-planned flexibility can be agreed with your Line Manager on an ad-hoc basis, and when personal and family commitments demand.
