Main purpose of job:

The British High Commission Residence is one of Suva’s most prestigious venues and has a high reputation for quality and service excellence. As the Residence Housekeeper you will be responsible for ensuring a high standard of housekeeping and organisation in support of delivering the High Commission objectives.   

The jobholder will need a ‘can do’ approach, excellent organisation skills, the ability to work at pace and manage competing demands.  Although we are a busy team, we are deeply committed to developing and supporting our staff and encourage flexible working.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

1. Housekeeping (70%)

  • Maintaining a high standard of housekeeping of official and household areas at the Residence, including cleaning and care of rooms, furniture and official crockery, silver and glassware as instructed daily, including:
    • Cleaning of public washrooms, patio area, decking and windows.
    • Laundry of official linens used for visits and events and household clothes, keeping the laundry room organised, tidy and clean at all times.
    • Preparing bedrooms and bathrooms for official houseguests; cleaning of household rooms.
    • Responsibility for maintaining cleanliness of the High Commissioner’s residence upstairs.
  • Prioritising own work to ensure tasks are completed on time and to standard.
  • Using own initiative to solve problems independently within own work area and raising issues with management when problems cannot be solved.
  • Working with the Corporate Services Team to flag any maintenance works or issues that arise at the official Residence.
  • Ensuring furniture, cutlery, glassware and linens are accounted for and maintained. Keeping a full inventory and completing a stock take after each event.
  • Under supervision of the CSM: monitoring the stock inventories of furniture, government art collection and maintaining the necessary records bi-annually.

2. Additional task as required (30%)

  • Ensuring the Residence is adequately set-up for visitors and events hosted by the High Commissioner at the Residence and meet required hygiene standards.
  • Welcome houseguests, assist them with luggage and direct them to their bedrooms.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with staff when they’re carrying out their duties at the Residence.
  • Cover for co-workers in housekeeping/Residence duties when necessary
  • Other duties as requested by the High Commissioner/Deputy High Commissioner and Events/Visits and Liaison Officer.

Open to Fiji citizens, permanent residents. Interstate applicants will be required to meet their own travel and relocation expenses.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

Staff recruited locally by the High Commission are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Fiji employment law.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.

Learning and development opportunities:

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to undergo various programme related training either virtually or in person that are essential for the role.

Working patterns:

The role can be offered on a part or full-time basis, dependent on the applicant. Full-time hours are 38 hours per week.

The successful candidate will be required to operate a flexible work pattern, occasionally working outside office hours to support preparation for Residence events/activities.
