Main purpose of job:

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is responsible for promoting UK trade and investment with the rest of the world. UK-Chile trade is strong, with the UK’s accession to CPTPP building on an already strong bilateral agreement to enable even more opportunity to boost exports and deepen our trading relationship. 

Working within the British Embassy in Chile, as well as collaborating closely with DBT Latin America and Caribbean (LATAC) and UK colleagues, the successful applicant will work to support UK exports into Chile across one or more sectors, deepening trade relations and contributing to economic growth and jobs.

Roles and responsibilities:

DBT Chile supports UK companies looking to grow their exports to Chile across a number of sectors including: infrastructure; renewable energy; defence and security; agriculture; healthcare and life sciences; food and drink; and financial and professional services. 

The selected candidate for this role will be part of the infrastructure sector team and (subject to reasonable changes) will be expected to:

1.    Provide support to UK companies to export to the Chilean market through well-planned interventions (meetings, introductions, events, marketing, partnerships, government engagement) contributing to the delivery of an ambitious export value target. 
2.    Contributing to a diverse pipeline of export projects and commercial opportunities for UK companies, working collaboratively in the DBT Chile infrastructure team and with regional and UK sector specialists. 
3.    Develop a good understanding of market access barriers affecting UK companies wishing to do business in Chile, engaging with trade policy focused colleagues to identify ways to address them in order to support commercial success.
4.    Build and manage a diverse public and private sector stakeholder network focused on potential Chilean buyers of UK exports and UK companies, including account managing relevant stakeholders, applying excellent customer service to increase the probability of successful exports. 
5.    Support the wider work of DBT Chile, other embassy sections and DBT LATAC (in particular the Andean subregion) when required to deliver shared objectives. 

The selected candidate will also act as Budget Manager within DBT Chile, and will be expected to:

1.    Ensure close monitoring of expenditure against departmental budget, processing monthly reports including forecasting for the Country Director (who is ultimate budget holder) and communicating risks/opportunities
2.    Ensure compliance with internal/departmental reporting requirements such as monthly forecasting using official IT systems
3.    Provide support to colleagues within DBT Chile to help them understand budgetary requirements/policies and processes including on procurement and receipt of goods and services.

•    Fluent Spanish and English (C1 equivalent – written and spoken)
•    Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office (in particular use of Excel)
•    Experience of forming professional relationships and stakeholder/account management

Language requirements: English and Spanish

Level of language required: Fluent written and spoken (CEFR C1 essential; C2 in at least one of the languages preferable)   

Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Chile

•    Business or trade related undergraduate qualification 
•    Experience of lead generation and business development
•    Experience of commercial work and business environment/culture
•    Experience and understanding of infrastructure sector
•    Familiarity with budget management and use of data/financial terms

Base Salary: 1.515.997 (gross)
Meals allowance: 150,000
Transport allowance: 69.000

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Working hours: Monday – Thursday 09:00 – 17:30, Friday 09:00 – 13:00

Opportunity to work from home for up to 2 days per week, subject to business need. Other arrangements may be considered according to business need.  

The FCDO operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.
