Main Purpose of Job:
The Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO) is the UK Government agency responsible for intellectual property policy and rights granting. It is an agency of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). The UK IPO plays a pivotal role in shaping and promoting Intellectual Property strategies across the globe.
The IP Attaché Program is a cornerstone of the UK IPO’s international engagement strategy. It places intellectual property attachés in key strategic markets around the world to influence the IP regimes of bilateral partners as well as directly supporting UK inward and outward trade through tailored IP support.
The UK IPO has given dedicated resource to the LATAC region through an IP attaché and IP analyst based in Brazil and a LATAC policy lead based in the UK. The successful applicant will work with the Regional IP Attaché, to support her with delivering the IP agenda in LATAC Region.
The current work plan reflects a marked focus on Brazil due to its economic significance, potential for market growth and opportunities to affect changes for maximum UK benefit. We also maintain light touch workplans with Chile, Peru, and Colombia. We regard the rest of the region as a “watching brief” but stay live to issues that may need us to re-prioritise our focus.
We are looking for someone who is curious, eager to learn, extremely organized and with strong analytical and relationship building skills. They should have a strong interest in politics and diplomacy and enjoy a good challenge! If this sounds like you, we want to hear from you!
Roles and responsibilities;
• Monitor all the pieces of legislation about IP in the Congress and keep the team updated;
• Keep an updated database of IP developments in Brazil, and report these developments back to UK stakeholders;
• Keep track of the IPO´s successes and developments in Brazil, that will later be transformed into case studies;
• Organize and join events with key stakeholders – occasional travel may be required;
• Keep track of IP developments in LATAC Countries, mainly in Peru, Colombia and Chile
• Organize the team´s finance and budget

Language requirements:
Language: English and Portuguese
Level of language required: Excellent English and Portuguese (spoken and written).
• Basic knowledge of IP
• A good knowledge of multi-cultural Britain, its language and geography
• Spanish language skills

Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Brazil.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

The successful candidate will be expected to complete a number of e-learning courses on consular assistance work and crisis within the first month of employment.
Working patterns:
This is a permanent, full time role – 36 hours/week, Monday to Friday. The work is hybrid (some time working in the office, some time working from home). The Mission has a smarter working policy and is committed to offering flexible working patterns balanced with the operational requirements of the role. Exceptionally, the successful candidate may be required to participate in training, call out arrangements for emergency cases or crisis work out of hours.
The successful candidate will be required to travel around once per month, depending on business need, sometime at short notice.
