The British Embassy in Bucharest is looking for two enthusiastic Interns to start as soon as possible. Our new colleagues will support the work of the Communications, Political, Economic Diplomacy, and Foreign Policy Teams.

Between them, the Interns will assist with overviews of current affairs and the management of the Embassy’s social media pages, with the chance to lead on their own projects and events. It is a great opportunity to build contacts, see how an Embassy runs and to engage with the Ambassador.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Support with background research on Embassy priority issues and current affairs (eg. internal politics, cyber, energy);

  • Support the Embassy Digital Lead with social media management;

  • Attend stakeholder meetings, events, conferences, and workshops. Provide readouts from meetings and take notes;

  • Support with arranging visits for UK officials to Romania and events linked to Embassy priorities;

  • Support teams in the delivery of projects;

  • Draft the press review every other week on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday by 09:30 and manage our externally facing inbox. 

  • Excellent command of spoken and written English and Romanian (at a minimum of C1 level according to CEFR*);

  • The completion of a bachelor university degree (This is an essential requirement. The candidate needs to be able to provide evidence in the form of the original licentia). It is desirable that applicants are currently or have recently earned degrees in Economics, Political Sciences, Journalism or International Affairs, but not exclusive of other degrees;

  • Availability for full-time employment from for a period of 12 months;  

  • Good organisational skills and ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences;

  • An interest to develop and seek on the job learning opportunities;

  • IT and social media literacy at a basic to intermediate level (if you are interested or skilled in doing more social media we would be pleased to hear from you).

  • Video and photo editing skills;

  • Interest in diplomacy and current economic and political affairs.

This is a full-time fixed-term contract for 12 months (35 hours net per week). Working patterns will be as follows:

Week 1 – 08:00am – 16:00pm Monday to Thursday, and 08:00am – 13:00pm on Friday.

Week 2 – 09:00am – 17:00am Monday to Thursday, and 08:30am – 13:30pm or 11:00am – 16:00pm on Friday

Staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for agreed extra hours worked. It is also possible to occasionally work from home. 

The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys a maximum of 14 Romanian / UK public holidays per year. 

The monthly salary is 3,700 RON gross. In addition, staff are entitled to a 13th month salary pro rata and may receive a performance related bonus at year end. Staff also receive meal vouchers and a monthly subscription to a medical centre. An individual personal development plan will be agreed with the successful candidate, which may include training outside Romania. The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance, and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of 30 working days. 

All applicants should have a pre-existing legal status to live and work in Romania. The British Embassy does not facilitate/sponsor visa applications and work permits. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Romanian employment law. 

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Romania and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.

Learning and development opportunities:

The successful applicant will have a full induction into both their areas of responsibility and working for the Embassy/ UK Government. There is also the possibility of a familiarisation visit to London. 

The job holder will have access to the extensive training and learning opportunities provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. The Embassy also runs a vibrant peer to peer learning programme which includes lunchtime talks, specialist briefings and other opportunities for development including mentorship by a British diplomat and exposure to high-level events.  

Key skills that will be developed: organisational skills, research and communication, and time management.
