Main Purpose of Job:

The British Embassy Jakarta is a large diplomatic mission overseeing a dynamic and rapidly expanding programme of activity to deliver on the UK’s strategic priorities in Indonesia. Increasing bilateral trade and investment is a high priority for the UK and you will work in the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), which is responsible for promoting UK trade and investment across the world, strengthening the rules-based international order, and delivering the UK’s ambitious trade policy agenda. The DBT team is seeking a communications and events manager to proactively lead on the design and delivery of a communications strategy for the entire DBT Indonesia Team.

Trade between the UK and Indonesia is currently worth £3.4 billion, and you will be part of DBT’s mission to build on this. Working to the Head of DBT Corporate Services in Indonesia, you will help achieve this by developing and delivering DBT’s annual media and communications strategy to promote UK trade and investments interests, initiatives, and activities, directly supporting the Department for Business and Trade’s objectives. You will ensure that this plan is tightly embedded in and supportive of the wider Embassy communications strategy and approach. 

This comprehensive plan will drive lead generation and highlight trade and investment successes through diverse communication strategies, including media engagements, press briefings, and targeted social media activity. Analysing the Indonesian media landscape and social media trends to provide senior leaders with strategic communications advice for maximising their reach and impact. You will ensure that we tell our story effectively and in an engaging manner, presenting a clear and compelling external narrative on the UK-Indonesia trading relationship. 

The DBT communications team works closely with the wider Embassy Media and Comms Team to ensure our messages land with our target audience and measure the outcomes of our communications activity. Collaboratively, you will help deliver a variety of high-profile activities resulting in a wide range of media coverage and generating trade and investment opportunities. 

You will also support the trade promotion team to secure new business for UK companies across a wide range of priority sectors such as energy, education, and healthcare. You will support the delivery of key activities within these sectors, including trade missions, inward Ministerial and Senior Official visits, exhibitions and receptions, assisting with logistics and programming to ensure these events deliver results for business and government.  

You will lead on crosscutting briefings within the team, provide support around taking meeting notes and records, and ensuring records are kept up to date.

What the Jobholder will be Expected to Achieve:

  • Develop and execute strategic insight-led campaigns that ignite interest in UK trade and investment across Indonesia, leading the delivery of the DBT Indonesia comms plan and supporting core scripts.
  • Work closely with wider Embassy and regional leads to develop a joined up, strategic narrative that embeds prosperity in wider Embassy and regional communications.
  • Work with leads in priority DBT sectors to design and deliver sectoral communication campaigns and associated marketing collaterals.
  • Lead on the design and delivery of topical, swift and engaging communications in support of the team’s objectives, producing high-quality written content for external communications channels, including social media, and work with international, regional and consumer media to deliver stories that extend our reach to new audiences.
  • Lead on content creation for DBT messaging across the Embassy’s channels, creating engaging social media posts to high-quality content creation using platforms like Canva.
  • Capture captivating photographs and videos of high-level events and visits, fuelling the narrative across various channels.
  • Work with other team members to evaluate and report campaign progress and outcomes and embed learning into ongoing work.
  • Actively manage the team’s event plan and forward look and horizon scanning for future communication opportunities, supporting cross-team projects to advance UK economic and trade policy goals.
  • Acting as the DIT brand and marketing champion and ensuring colleagues are aware of marketing and branding guidelines.
  • Work with the wider Embassy Media and Communications Team to forge vital partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, media partners, and government officials to amplify your message and highlight the collaboration of DBT staff in comms projects.
  • Support the team’s sector advisors in priority sectors such as renewable energy, healthcare and education to deliver impactful events across Indonesia and secure new business for UK companies. Work closely with these sector advisors to provide cross-cutting sector support for events and activities.
  • Lead on cross-cutting briefing within the team, developing well-drafted briefing content for seniors and ensuring our objectives are clearly articulated. Maintain good records and notes of meetings and ensure these are available on shared workspaces.
  • Working in partnership with sector advisers, Regional & HQ marketing team, and our delivery partners to bid for marketing budget, including planning and monitoring of marketing activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Bahasa Indonesia
  • Editorial requirements include content structure and categorisation, content development, content source and research
  • Previous professional experience of producing content for a variety of channels and experience of media relations
  • Previous copywriting experience (writing, editing, proof-checking and maintaining a consistent style and tone throughout the materials.)
  • Previous event management experience, including planning, budgeting, producing briefing, logistics, liaising with suppliers, producing marketing collaterals, branding, etc.
  • Proactive and detail oriented with an ability to develop high quality content ideas and insights
  • Understanding of the media landscape in Indonesia
  • Understand best practice on social media channels including which content and approaches work on each and why
  • Content capture capabilities using basic camera and video camera
  • Digital editing skills or keen to learn editing suites such as Adobe, Canva, Clipchamp
  • Creativity and keenness to develop and deliver innovative, low and no cost external communication campaigns, using earned media coverage, digital and internal channels
  • Confident presenting and giving advice to senior stakeholders
  • Understanding of insight, data, and evaluation to measure and inform communications outcomes and a keenness to act on results to improve future activity
  • Adaptable, collaborative, and strong team player able to develop good working relationships inside and outside HMG network work at pace

Language Requirements:

  • Level of language required: Fluent – excellent working levels in English and Bahasa Indonesia, both written and spoken
  • Evidence of a recent IELTS score above 7.0

  • Understanding of the business environment in Indonesia
  • Experience of working in an international organisation/diplomatic mission
  • Prior working experience with internal trade organisations, trade publications, consultancies, will be an advantage
  • Understanding of government ways of working and the UK PLC offer

Working Patterns: 

Normal working hours are 39.5 (gross) per week: 07:30hrs to 16:00hrs from Monday to Thursday and 07:30hrs to 13:00hrs. The team operates a ‘core hours’ policy of 09:00hrs to 15:00hrs with individual flexibility around that and we are open to requests to work condensed hours, subject to business need.

Some evening and weekend work is required on occasion. Embassy Standard Terms and Conditions apply and provide for time outside of working hours to be compensated through Time-off-in-Lieu. The job may involve some travel, including to the UK, regionally and within Indonesia. A willingness and ability to travel is required.

British Embassy Jakarta supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering and is committed to staff maintaining a healthy work-life balance. The role is suitable for some remote working, and members of the team tend to work from home around 2 days a week (subject to Line Manager’s approval).

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. All candidates must be legally able to work and reside in the country of the vacancy with the correct visa/work permit status or demonstrate eligibility to obtain the relevant permit.

In relation to this, the successful candidate will need to arrange for his/her own Police Certificate.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.

The FCDO also operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.

The Communications and Events Manager will gain a broad range of trade and investment experience which they can use to further progress their career within DBT.
