The British Embassy Amman has a vacancy for Finance Officer, job grade Administrative Officer (AO), on a fixed term contract for two (2) years.

This pivotal role offers the successful candidate the opportunity to play an integral part in managing the Embassy’s financial portfolio, ensuring the effective delivery of key financial functions. As a Finance Officer, you will be responsible for a broad range of duties, including handling corporate financial returns, the Embassy payroll, and providing essential support in overseeing the Embassy’s annual budget. You will be expected to manage these responsibilities in strict accordance with His Majesty’s Government (HMG) rules and regulations, ensuring the highest standards of financial compliance.

Duties and responsibilities:

– Financial Management

  • Process and review monthly payroll for Country Based Staff (CBS), ensuring accurate data entry and timely salary disbursement.
  • Process and review monthly social security contributions, ensuring compliance with local regulations and timely payment.
  • Prepare financial journals, ensuring they are properly documented and error-free.
  • Maintain an up-to-date account filing system, ensuring all financial records are easily accessible and compliant with auditing requirements. Regularly weed files when they exceed time retention limits and reduce paperwork held on site.

– Cash & Bank Operations

  • Perform daily cash reconciliations to maintain accurate financial records.
  • Prepare and manage the Network Post Account Sheet and ensure timely replenishment of cash imprests.
  • Prepare cash funding profiles, ensuring adequate cash flow for operations.
  • Monitor bank and cash balances, ensuring sufficient funds are available while providing regular updates and support to the Regional Finance Hub in Manila.

– Payment Processing & Reconciliation

  • Proactively follow up on outstanding debit memos, ensuring timely payments and resolving any discrepancies during reconciliation.
  • Conduct regular checks on Goods Received Not Invoiced (GRNI) and Unreconciled Credit Card (UCC) transactions, ensuing timely reconciliation and resolution of any outstanding issues.
  • Provide training sessions for staff on purchase-to-pay procedures and appropriate use of corporate cards, enhancing financial literacy across the organization.

– Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Assist in the preparation of budget forecasts.
  • Collaborate with the Finance Manager to ensure alignment between financial performance and organisational goals.

– General Support & Oversight

  • Provide assistance and administrative support to the Finance Manager as needed.
  • Act as a point of contact and cover for the Finance Manager during periods of absence, ensuring continuous financial operations.

– Other local requirements

  • Undergo specific training and be ready to take on a logistics role in the event of a crisis.
  • Take part in desk-based crisis exercises in preparation for this.

– Resource/s managed

  • One (1) Finance Assistant at AA job grade

The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future and this would be at the discretion of the line manager/ senior management and agreed with the jobholder. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as required.

Eligibility:

If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as:

  • You already have the right to live and work in Jordan; and
  • You receive the appropriate level of security clearance.

  • Relevant work experience in financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, payroll processing, and reconciliation, ideally for at least three (3) years.
  • Compliance and governance: Strong understanding of financial regulations, compliance, and governance practices, particularly within an organisational or governmental context.
  • Holds a degree in finance or accounting or holds a professional accounting qualification (or be currently working towards one.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including the use of formulas, pivot tables, data analysis, and financial modelling.
  • Communication skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial colleagues.
  • Highly organised and confident in handling day-to-day tasks and decisions.
  • Excellent team working skills including evidence of working collaboratively with multicultural colleagues.
  • Demonstrates courtesy and consideration in dealing with internal and external stakeholders. Able to show discretion in handling any sensitive matters, with the trust of all involved
  • Strong IT skills and proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).

  • Knowledge of accounting software: Familiarity with financial management and accounting software, such as SAP, Oracle, or other Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
  • Multinational or governmental experience: Previous experience working in a multinational or governmental organisation, particularly in financial compliance with international regulations.
  • Training and development: Ability to train and mentor colleagues in financial processes and the use of Excel or other financial tools.
  • Arabic language skills, both written and spoken.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of JOD 1,321 per month based on 37 hours per week.

Salary will be paid in gross, and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities. If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary, which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax. Further information on this will be provided at interview if necessary.

This role is for a full-time employment on a fixed term contract basis for two (2) years. The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-days probationary period. The appointment is subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances. The selected candidate must have the right to live and work in Jordan.

Normal working hours at the Embassy are Sundays to Wednesdays from 08:00-15:30 and Thursdays from 08:00-15:00. The Embassy operates a flexible working policy that allows staff to work different hours as well as allowing staff to work from home one day a week, based on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies. The jobholder should be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will also be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends).

The package includes a good level of health insurance and a friendly, English-speaking work environment. We offer opportunities to develop professional skills through our Learning & Development offer. Leave entitlement is 25 days (on pro rata basis) plus 14 public holidays.

The Embassy follows a 70-20-10 model of learning. Your Line Manager will help you develop a personalised L&D plan and will share opportunities, resources, and guidance to ensure you have any necessary learning for the role with ability to achieve full potential.

You are expected to have a proactive approach to your own learning, and you will be expected to be able to quickly achieve relevant skills for the job and be able to prove at least 15 hours of continuing professional development per year to maintain those skills. You will also undergo crisis training and be ready to take on a logistics role in the event of a crisis, taking part in desk-based crisis exercises and standing ready to support if a real crisis occurs.
