The British Embassy Amman has a vacancy for Trade and Investment Adviser, job grade Executive Officer (EO), under the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). This is for a fixed term contract for one (1) year, with a possibility of renewal/ extension.

The Trade and Investment Adviser will be responsible for leading on identifying and strengthening business ties between the UK and Jordan. The jobholder will be leading on strategic sectors. This involves raising the profile of UK products and services; supporting the implementation of the UK-Jordan Association Agreement; and attracting and supporting Jordan-based companies to expand operations into the UK. The role requires market knowledge and a network of contacts. The role involves collaboration with the wider DBT Middle East Regional and Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Economy and Prosperity teams.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Proactively develop and manage strong working relationships with key stakeholders in the Jordanian and British business communities, relevant government bodies in order to identify and increase export and investment opportunities.
  • Trade policy: Support the implementation of the UK-Jordan Association Agreement by sharing  insights at relevant meetings, trade updates, opportunities, and needed market research.
  • Market access: Identify and develop an action plan to spot opportunities and barriers through market knowledge and regular interactions with key contacts.
  • Export wins: Build an effective network with relevant leaders in  entities in Jordan and the UK to secure quality, high-value business wins.
  • Monitor economic and trade trends, with an overall responsibility for the Education, Healthcare, and Food & Drink sectors. As a sector lead, you will be responsible of obtaining market intelligence, identifying commercial opportunities for UK companies, monitoring market trends and projects, assessing demand for UK products and services, and key areas of growth.
  • Work closely with colleagues across the UK Government; UK Export Finance (UKEF), Trade Policy, Economy and Prosperity, and Regional Sector Leads to identify and collaborate on cross-cutting priorities.
  • Manage visit programmes with key stakeholders to maximise exposure for UK companies. Provide relevant background information and introductions that will help UK companies explore and secure business in the market.
  • Monitor and report DBT Jordan budget spending and forecast on a monthly basis and make necessary updates on internal on-line systems.
  • Contribute to wider Embassy objectives through participation in British Embassy committees and corporate activities.

The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future and this would be at the discretion of the line manager/ senior management and agreed with the jobholder. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis.

Eligibility:

If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as:

  • You have the right to live and work in Jordan; and
  • You receive the appropriate level of security clearance.

  • Relevant experience in a similar field (business development and/or trade), ideally for at least three (3) years.
  • Solid understanding of the drivers and challenges of the local trade market and sectors in Jordan, including major opportunities and trends.
  • Relevant experience in comprehensive account management. Ability to develop and maintain a network of contacts to identify trade opportunities and to facilitate business connections and partnerships.
  • Proven experience of working pro-actively, independently, and towards performance targets within a team setting, contributing to the overall goals of the section and spot business opportunities.
  • Team player willing to work on their own initiative as well as with others, including in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Strong customer focus and ability to deliver quality service.
  • Able to organise and prioritise workload and meet deadlines and changing priorities whilst maintaining close attention to detail and without compromising the quality of the work.
  • Excellent communication skills in English. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication.
  • Strong IT skills and well-versed in the use of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).

  • Familiarity with the UK market would be an advantage.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of JOD 1,842 per month based on 37 hours per week.

Salary will be paid in gross, and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities. If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary, which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax. Further information on this will be provided at interview if necessary.

This role is for a full-time employment on a fixed term contract basis for one (1) year. The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-days probationary period. The appointment is subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances. The selected candidate must have the right to live and work in Jordan.

Normal working hours at the Embassy are Sundays to Wednesdays from 08:00-15:30 and Thursdays from 08:00-15:00. The Embassy operates a flexible working policy that allows staff to work different hours as well as allowing staff to work from home one day a week, based on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies. The jobholder should be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will also be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends), especially during visits and events.

The package includes a good level of health insurance and a friendly, English-speaking work environment. We offer opportunities to develop professional skills through our Learning & Development offer. Leave entitlement is 25 days (on pro rata basis) plus 14 public holidays.

The Embassy follows a 70-20-10 model of learning. You are expected to have a proactive approach to your own learning and your Line Manager will help you develop a personalised L&D plan and will share opportunities, resources, and guidance to ensure you have any necessary learning for the role with ability to achieve full potential. You will also be encouraged to undertake developmental training and get involved in BE Amman corporate activities that offer an opportunity for professional development.
