Main Purpose of Job:
The British Embassy Tokyo is looking for a Communications Officer to join its dynamic Media, Communications and Marketing (MCM) team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the UK’s public diplomacy efforts in Japan by helping to deliver strategic, high-impact communications across a wide range of sectors including trade, science, culture, defence and security. You will be part of a dynamic team that shapes the public narratives of the UK’s presence in Japan.
As part of the Strategic Communications team, you will work alongside colleagues to support the embassy’s communication strategy, including social media management, media engagement, and content creation. You will also play a key role in promoting and shaping key UK government messages to Japanese audiences, aligning communications with embassy priorities, and working closely with various embassy sections to ensure cohesive messaging.

Language Requirements:
This role requires written and spoken proficiency in both English and Japanese. Fluency (minimum of C2 level for CEFR framework*) in Japanese and business level (minimum of high B2) in English.

Working Patterns:
Full time and office based. 37.5 hours per week. This position may require regular travel within Asia-Pacific and occasionally to the UK.
The British Embassy Tokyo supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering. This particular role allows for flexibility in start and end times, working compressed hours, remote working (for agreed periods), and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management.
Applicants must possess or be able to secure a local work permit.
The FCDO also operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.
Learning and Development Opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):
The British Embassy and UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office provides a range of training opportunities in core diplomatic and commercial skills, from networking and communication to project management.
The British Embassy offers comprehensive learning and development opportunities that will be fully available to the jobholder. We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals. We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals.
It is possible to undertake specific training in marketing-focused areas to enhance skills/experience to support your work.
All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this, and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.
There will be a number of Embassy-specific courses that will need to be completed on arrival, which all new staff undertake in their induction process.
