Main Purpose of Job:

To work with the Embassy Security Team to protect staff, visitors and the FCDO estate from various threats, including but not limited to Fire, Thief and a myriad of security issues and incidents.

What will the Jobholder be Expected to Achieve:

  • Responsible for safety and security of staff, visitors and the FCDO estate, reporting to Security Supervisor and Post Security Manager
  • Perform routine guard duties as contained in Security Management Procedure (SMP) 010 – Instructions for Security Guards (available on successful appointment)
  • Regularly patrol the FCDO estate in accordance with the Guard Monitoring System (GMS)
  • Controlling vehicle and pedestrian access to the FCDO estate and recording the details of all non-Embassy vehicles and Pedestrians
  • Conduct access control processes; valid reason for access (appointment), proof of identity (valid photo identification) and subject to search (bags and person for all pedestrians and issuing all relevant passes
  • Maintaining the in-place occurrence book
  • Monitoring the FCDO estate CCTV system and video phones
  • Carrying out daily and frequent radio checks between both Embassy Control Room and other parts of the FCDO estate and all official vehicles
  • Receive and record sealed mail bags, both inbound and outbound
  • Complete a visual and detailed check of all mail (less that received by official bag) using the Todd Research X-ray machine and record the relevant details before passing the mail to Reception staff for further distribution
  • During silent hours advise any visitors or telephone callers of the regular working hours and details of the official website for detailed services, which is contained in the core script, or escalate as appropriate
  • Other security-related duties as directed by Security Supervisor, Post Security Manager and the Senior Security Team; TOSM, DPSO and PSO

Resources Managed (staff and expenditure): None

  • Minimum High School education level is required
  • At least 3 years’ work-related experience in a similar organisation and/or security role
  • Fluent in spoken and written Burmese
  • Good command of spoken English
  • Available and able to work shifts, which include, but not limited to; 07:00 – 19:00 and 19:00-07:00)
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a team
  • Active and able to work flexible working hours

Language Requirements:

  • Burmese and English
  • Level of language required: Myanmar (Fluent in spoken and written), English (Good command of spoken)

The British Embassy Yangon offers a competitive remuneration package, including salary, benefits, leave entitlement of 22 days per annum (calculated in pro rata).  

Not suitable for flexible working, this is a set pattern over a 48-hour week, modified for shift working pattern.

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment and security checks. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy Yangon is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law. 

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. All candidates must be legally able to work and reside in the country of the vacancy with the correct visa/work permit status or demonstrate eligibility to obtain the relevant permit. Any costs related to obtaining or renewing permits and visas are the responsibility of the successful applicant.  

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.

Guard training, security awareness training and other relevant training required as a member of the British Embassy Yangon.
