View Vacancy – Political Officer – British High Commission Belmopan (5 months maternity cover)

The British High Commission Belize is actively recruiting a temporary Political Officer. Based at the British High Commission in Belmopan, the Political Officer will lead on political and economic work for the High Commission, covering a wide range of themes, strengthening and amplifying the UK’s work in Belize and supporting bilateral relations. 

Roles and responsibilities:

    Political analysis & reporting

    • Monitor and provide analysis and reporting on a wide range of themes in Belize. This includes domestic politics, human rights including equality and inclusion, the economic and financial situation, security and crime, constitutional reform and foreign policy.

    Written briefing

    • Provide concise briefing on a wide range of themes related to UK Government interests, adapted to different formats.

    Media

    • Monitor press, broadcast and online reporting in Belize related to UK areas of interest; liaise with the media houses, write press releases related to UK and High Commission activity, support the team’s social media activities and keep the High Commission’s communication implementation plan updated.

    Visit programmes

    • Arrange programmes for official visits, including identifying people to meet with, locations and timings.

    Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

    Management of small communications budget.

    Essential on arrival: 

    • University degree in a related field;
    • Experience working in a field relevant to this position;
    • Experience of providing analysis and concise written reporting;
    • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
    • Effective oral and written communication skills;
    • Strong IT skills;
    • A good understanding of the political and economic landscape in Belize.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage stakeholders effectively.
    • Must have the legal status to live and work in Belize.

    Language requirements: 

    Language: English

    Level of language required: Advanced 

    Desirable:

    • Previous experience of working in an NGO, international organisation or Government;
    • Previous experience of working with the media;
    • Previous experience of arranging visits
    • Knowledge of economics.

    Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

    The successful candidate will be required to work mainly from the High Commission Office in Belmopan.
