Climate Diplomacy
Main purpose of job: The UK’s Brazil Network includes the Embassy in Brasilia and Consulates in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Recife and covers political, economic, climate, trade and commercial work. Teams across the Network work together to strengthen the UK and Brazil’s strategic relationship on by deepening bilateral cooperation, trade ties, safeguarding our security, and tackling common climate and environmental challenges, as well as promoting our values, protecting human rights and democratic freedoms, and leveraging the UK’s position as a global hub for science and innovation. Climate and Nature are priorities for the UK Government and missions overseas, including forming a core part of the bilateral relationship between UK and Brazil. In recent years the UK COP26 Presidency has increased our engagement with Brazil at the Federal and Subnational levels, Congress, Private Sector, Civil Society and Academia. Since then, with renewed ambition in Brazil, a UK-Brazil Partnership for Green and Inclusive Growth was developed and followed by a recent Joint Statement on International Climate Cooperation on the road to COP 30 and beyond. This role will be key in securing continuous strong delivery of the bilateral cooperation and political dialogue across climate, nature and energy by enabling colleagues across the UK Brazil Network and London an excellent understanding of the Brazilian political and policy contexts and supporting responsiveness, cohesion and impact of our collective efforts, including working with thematic leads to steer impact and leverage our £510 million International Climate Finance portfolio. |
Roles and responsibilities: This is an excellent senior adviser job in the British Embassy, Brasilia. You will work with a high-performing team and be a key adviser for the Ambassador and other senior colleagues. While some flexibility will be needed, you can expect to cover: Policy Strategy and Coherence – 40%
Climate Policy Analysis, Engagement and Impact – 50%
Management and corporate – 10%

• Extensive experience in working with climate and nature policy or in a relevant field
• Experience in providing evidenced research, reporting and analysis that leverages external networks
• Hold a University degree and at least five years of relevant work experience
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Excellent organisational skills
• Ability to make nuanced and tailored judgements based on a wide range of information and in support of strategic outcomes
• Highly collaborative approach and ability to develop others.

The UK’s Brazil Network is committed to Learning and Development both through formal training and development opportunities ‘on-the-job’. The jobholder will be encouraged to take advantage of training available locally as well as through the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office’s International Academy.
Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Brazil.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
The FCDO operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.

Working hours: 36h per week. Monday – Thursday 09:00 – 17:15, Friday 09:00 – 17:00.
Flexible working patterns are acceptable for this position but would need to be agreed in advance by the line manager. Please note that the British Embassy in Brasilia requires employees to work from the office at least three days a week.
