The British High Commission Bridgetown is seeking a Senior Legal Adviser to join their team. The incumbent will provide high level legal advice and support through the undertaking of a range of research projects and management tasks working with our senior Criminal Justice Advisor (CJA). The Legal Adviser assists the CJA with the successful and timely implementation of policies and guidance which progress criminal justice reform in the region as part of the UK-US funded Criminal Justice Reform Project in Barbados, Guyana and the Eastern Caribbean.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Substantial legal research and the presentation of findings. Policy writing and drafting legislation for submission to government.
- Drafting and delivery of training courses and modules for criminal justice stakeholders.
- Preparation of various reports. Production of information leaflets and documents. Research and preparation of briefing papers. The development and production of presentations.
- Providing legal support for projects, ensuring the timely preparation of all information required to ensure that deadlines are met.
- Organising meetings and conferences. Preparing and distributing agendas and briefing papers, taking and distributing minutes, and pursuing matters raised. Support on administrative arrangements if required.
- Managing multiple projects and work streams, gathering and communicating information at regular intervals.
- Collaboration with a wide range of internal & external stakeholders and key contacts to ensure effective delivery at pace.
- Engaging and collaborating with British High Commission (BHC) colleagues and committees to help achieve wider BHC objectives.
- Assisting the CJA with ad hoc assignments and tasks.

Essential on arrival:
- University degree in law or criminology or a related field with an emphasis in criminal justice
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills; strong stakeholder focus. The incumbent must be comfortable at conversing at all levels within the organisation and externally.
- Excellent organisational skills, strong coordination, planning and teamwork skills; project management skills with the ability to manage a number of projects concurrently.
- A proactive approach and the ability to work “hands-on” as required, strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects at pace
- Advanced IT experience including MS Word, Excel and internet research skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all areas of work.
- The ability to build networks and assimilate information quickly

Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Barbados.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.

Any other information: The role is open to anyone who is already in possession of the independent right to reside and work in CARICOM. Appointment is subject to successful Local and UK internal security checks and for CBS, a clean Barbados Police Certificate of Character must be presented at interview. Regional travel may be required The period of probation for this role in 6 months. The British High Commission reserves the right to extend this in order to fairly assess performance A full induction and coaching will be arranged for the successful applicant. The starting salary for this full time, temporary position is BD$ $143,987 Subject to plan provider approval, group medical coverage is offered after the first month of service. This position is not eligible for the group pension scheme Core office hours are 7.45am-4pm, Monday -Thursday and 8am-1pm on Fridays. This role is full time at 38hrs gross p/w (with half hour for lunch Mon-Thurs) Annual leave entitlement is 16 days rising to 20 days after one year of service. Leave is pro-rated per calendar year. A combination of up to 14 UK and local public holiday days are also observed. |
