Main Purpose of Job:
Political/Policy Officer: To monitor, advise and report on political and policy developments in Tonga and the region, which may affect the UK (including risks and opportunities).
Communications Officer: To lead on press, social media and external and internal communications work for the High Commission
Project and programmes: To lead on project and programme work for the High Commission, including Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships, development projects and programmes and to organise and run high level visit programmes.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
Policy Officer (40%):
- Track the Kingdom of Tonga’s policy developments, providing political advice on current affairs.
- Develop and maintain a local network of key stakeholders and policy influencers including in government, non-government and parliamentary organisations.
- Write regular analytical and advisory reports to UK and regional colleagues in the London/Oceania Network on political developments. Contribute to political reporting for high level events, visits and activities.
- Identify opportunities for the UK to engage with the government of the Kingdom of Tonga on UK foreign policy priorities, including regional projects.
- Summarise media reports for the High Commissioner and Deputy High Commissioner.
Communications (25%):
- Devise and implement internal and external communication plans for the High Commission.
- Manage and lead on all forms of communications mediums for the High Commission including creating and posting articles on social media platforms to promote UK objectives.
- Draft speeches and print media articles to promote UK objectives and events.
Projects and programmes (35%):
- Identify, create and manage small projects in support of UK priorities in Tonga in line with FCDO rules, regulations and guidance
- Promote the UK’s support to the education sector through managing and co-ordinating all activities for Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships Schemes.
- Devise and implement plans for high level visits and events, such as visits by UK Ministers.
Other duties as necessary and as determined by the High Commissioner and Deputy High Commissioner.

- Similar policy/communications experience working in a government/NGO/international company or diplomatic mission
- IT literate, particularly with Microsoft software (Outlook, Word, Teams, Excel)
- Strong knowledge of Tongan government institutions and systems and Tongan media
- Proficient spoken and written English.
- Native/bilingual fluent spoken and written Tongan

Working Patterns:
The High Commission can consider flexible working arrangements in line with its terms and conditions of service.
No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. Applicants must have authorisation to work in Tonga in order to be eligible to apply.
Staff recruited locally by the High Commission are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Kingdom of Tonga employment law.
We are a relatively young and small mission and continually adjusting to the work environment we find ourselves in, so the ideal candidate for this role would be flexible and positive in adapting to change.
